I model in small scales (1:450, 1:220) and need accurate measurements, this is just right and not overly expensive.

I had no issues with this caliper. I used it to measure shrub diameters.

Nice unit. Initial battery did not last long - thank good for the spare batteries that came with it.Easy to read readout, seems to be very well made.

I've long been a fan of General Tools. I often work on guitars and basses. If I need to measure the width of the neck, or nut, etc. this is perfect. I can just do it in a second. It's sort of a composite plastic. Plenty strong for me. I don't use it as a can opener!I use this thing all the time, because it's so easy to grab, and I can see the dial fine. For smallish things, I much prefer MM over inches. It's much easier to use. Also, I don't like the digital ones! In my experience, mechanical ones are more accurate and more straight forward. (Maybe because I didn't spend enough money on the dig...) But mechanical and metric for me, thank you.

I had a "General" brand plastic caliper for many years. I am a hobbyist who repairs and restores antique cameras. My toolbox was stolen and I had to replace all my calipers. Unfortunately both "Lowe's" and "Home Depot" no longer carry the "General" line of small tools and measuring tools. I was happy to see that "Amazon" still carried this particular caliper. I have a very high quality electronic stainless steel caliper but I use this inexpensive one quite often. The main dial registers in 1/64th of an inch and 1/100th of an inch. I find this invaluable to have a direct 1/64th inch readout so I can quickly break the measurement down to standard English measurement and then convert to decimal. The only negative I have is the dial has no millimeter scale and the only millimeter and inch reference is on the long side. I'd prefer a mm reference rather than the 1/100th inch reference on the dial.

After 30 years, my previous General dial caliper had become worn, and one of the "ears" that is used to measure inside had broken off. So I ordered a new caliper. The old ones were grey, the new one is black and yellow. It worked well for my first readings. However, then I needed to measure a depth, and the new caliper was not able to do so.Previously, the depth measurements were done using a rod that extended from the end of the caliper, as shown in the attached photo. The diameter of the metal rod was about 1/16", an important dimension that influences its utility. The new version has replaced the metal rod with a thick plastic bar that is about four times as thick. For the purposes of the measurement I was attempting, the new caliper was useless. I was glad I had not discarded by old caliper, as I needed to fall back to the old one to complete the task.Btw, the task the new caliper failed to perform was measuring the depth of a model airplane wheel's bearing bore, which corresponds to the wheel's width. The bore was 5/32" and the new caliper's depth probe was too wide to fit into the bore. Ultimately, the old caliper measured the depth. The model airplane is back flying and I'm off to my next contest.

Last one gave me 15 years of reliable use. Use it to make new and measure finished violin family bows. Can't use steel jaws because they would scratch and dent. Plus these are way lighter. Mechanically, my old one still works fine. It's just that the fine tip of the jaws have finally worn slightly from years of contact with rough wood, throwing measure off by 0.3 mm from thicker inner portion of jaws which are still perfect. Got my moneys worth and happy to buy the same again. I'll keep using the old one for roughing, where the wood's more wearing.

Yes, this is a good tool. I used one years ago and really liked it. It's durable, lightweight, and accurate enough for woodworking. I don't feel I have to be too careful handling it in my shop. Falls on the floor, no big deal.I purchased one recently based on one I used years ago and it seems to be the same tool. However, one important detail has been left out. The older one included a very nice conversion scale on the back. Sure, we all can do the math and reduce the fractions, but it was really nice to be able to flip over the older tool and have the information on the back. Feel like spending the day reducing fractions? I don't. 22/64? 16/64? etc.I'm always disappointed when I buy something I've used in the past and I find that the manufacturer has cut corners/costs by giving you less. As much as I like this tool, I'm sorry that General doesn't include the handy conversion scale on the back. For that reason, I'm giving it low marks. Attention manufacturers: consumers wont always accept your cost cutting programs!
