Product Description

2" (Dia.) Drawer Lock Bit

Amazon.com

The Freud 2-Inch Drawer Lock Bit forms a strong joint between the sides and front of a drawer. The drawer fronts are formed horizontally, flat on table surface; the drawer sides are formed vertically against the fence of the table. These bits feature a kickback reducing design for safety and are computer-balanced to insure vibration-free operation at speeds that are a safe margin above the typical 22,000 RPMs of most routers. For use on CNC and other automatic routers as well as hand-held and table-mounted portable routers, this bit cuts all composition materials, plywood, hardwood, and soft wood. The Drawer Lock Router Bit has a 2-inch overall diameter and length, and a 1/2-inch shank diameter. These two bits are covered by Freud's limited lifetime warranty.

Easy to set up and get tight fitting drawer boxes. Makes strong joints. Cut through red oak smoothly.

Takes a handful of test runs to get it dialed in right but after that you can knock the drawers out. Makes for a very strong joint.

I haven't had great luck with bits like this but this bit worked great. I made half a dozen drawers in no time. They all turned out great. Set up was fairly easy after I watched a video on how to do it. Give them a try.

Revised: Don't know what I was doing wrong, but now the bit is working fine. I guess it was operator error somehow.Bought this to replace an older Freud bit, same part number. The old one made tight joints, but this one leaves a gap no matter how I adjust it. I will return it as defective unless someone can tell me I'm doing something wrong. Raising and lowering the bit, and moving the fence in and out doesn't seem to help.

Got this bit to make a series of drawers for a mobile miter saw station I’m making. Unlike some reviews, I found this bit pretty easy to set up within a couple of trials. Then made a couple of set up blocks once the bit was set which has made it even easier to set up again. The bit is very sharp and the fit, once properly set, is very good. Would highly recommend this bit if you’re looking to make a bunch of drawers fairly quickly and easily. The only downside I found was the drawer glue up got a bit tricky to assemble as the sides don’t stay together as well while you’re trying to assemble the drawer as do dovetails or box joints. However a couple of clamps solved this issue easily.

Cuts like a hot knife through butter!Got one of these puppies when I was the Cabinet Shop Foreman in the local rat race and loved it. To the betterment of my own sanity I got out and as soon as I found myself with a stack of maple with which I was to fashion a boat load of drawers I opened up the amazon and grabbed it!Pros:-Easy to set up, just grab a few scraps of the same thickness as your drawer sides and adjust the depth on a pair of fresh edges until you've got a tight fit I usually get it by the second or third try. Fence adjustment is easier and less critical on the drawer front, imho-Cuts great! Use a backer board on your mitre guide to reduce blowout, and avoid knots and using ply or silica laden woods and it will stay sharp for an age as well-Nice thick carbide that can be reground again and again (use only the best sharpening services available!)Cons:-Some of the paint chipped, and in another area it was all gooped up-The damned rings on my router insert are either too small or too big and I'm beginning to feel a lot like Goldilocks

Worked very well and gave a nice looking strong joint. I got lucky with the set up, my first cut was slightly off, and I made a very small adjustment of the height and it was perfect after that. Once you have the height set correctly it is a good idea to make a setup block for the future.

Great bit...makes easy, perfect joints once set to 3/8" and not the 15/32" I was trying to use. There were several references with links detailing the set-up but they were broken with the exception of one that was presented as generic but gave the measurement specific for the 1/4" bit which does not work with the 1/2".

I will begin this review by stating that this is my only disapointment with Freud brand Bit's to date and I would rate it a negitive 1 if it was an option . The first issue is that the over all height is short by a minimum of 1" to use with any kind of sled or carriage to safely guide the front and side drawer pieces. Freud warns to collet the bit a minimun of 80%, and I agree. But with a mere two inchs in length and half of that securred in the collet, there is not much height left to work and adjustments or clearences. The remaing height between the top of the collet and the top of the bit will barely allow the use of 1/2" stock. Don't even think about 3/4" material or working with safety jigs such as a sled or a vertical carrage. To use this bit without a sled or a carrage is awkward at best and dangerous just the same. The second issue is that Freud does not include any set-up min / max suggestions. Finally, do not....use this with laminated stock such as Baltic Birch or red oak plywood. Any cross grain cutting will ruined the material.I will eat this experience (time, raw material, purchased price and shipping) and the bit will forever collect dust unless Freud will accept it back. I will go back to using reliable pocket screw and glue methods for now and seek more dove tail education.Jim Jones,Rochester NY

Honestly I'd give this 5 stars because of the nice joints it makes, but it loses one for absence of documentation. Normally I would not expect documentation with a router bit but this one is pretty tricky to use and should come with instructions.First, nowhere in the packaging or on Amazon's site does it tell you that the drawer front MUST be 3/4" and the side can be either 3/4" or 1/2".Second, it comes with no instructions and the setup is not straightforward. I found good instructions on the web site of a different manufacturer of drawer lock bits.Third, nowhere is it mentioned that one has to use a sacrificial zero clearance fence when making a drawer lock joint in cabinet grade plywood. I used a spare piece of poplar. My tip: get the height set using one sacrificial fence, then cut a new one for the cleanest joints, because it is crucial to have zero clearance between the top of the bit and the fence. Even 1/16" will result in significant tear-out.Last, because the setup is so fiddly, I do not recommend you use this bit for just a couple joints. If you are going to do a run of drawers its worth the effort, but not for one or two.
