Firefly adds firepower to your Swiss Army knife! Firefly is a firesteel flint type fire starter tool accessory replacement for the Swiss Army knife toothpick. Designed and manufactured by Tortoise Gear for use in Victorinox brand knives. Regular size Firefly replaces 50mm slanted top toothpicks for use in Victorinox knives 84mm and larger. The Firefly is made from a superior custom ferrocerium misch-metal formula giving it many advantages. The softer custom metals mix provides greater flexibility making it less brittle and giving it double the break strength of a typical firesteel or ferrocerium formula. The softer metals formula also allows for bigger sparks without harming the relatively soft stainless steel metal tools of Swiss Army knives. The Firefly mix sparks very easily with very little pressure needed during the strike. Every Firefly comes with a glow-in-the-dark top. When charged in sunlight this provides up to 12 hours of glow to help find your knife or Firefly at night. Two color choices are available: Neon green-yellow glow, and classic ivory glow. Firefly products come in high quality packaging with fully illustrated instructions for use printed on the inside. The re-closable clam shell can be used to store removed toothpicks and extra Fireflys. Firefly products are backed by a 1 month manufacturer warranty against any manufacturing defects.

Ordered these by mistake. My fault. After struggling to get the mini’s (they would arrive taken out of the package as a single and each time broken because of it (thanks Etsy). I measured the toothpick and broke off the extra length. While it’s a tight fit, they do fit, and the extra little piece of nylon grip that sticks out, helps to pull it out of the knife pocket. Perfect for backpacking.

First, the plastic "knob" or "handle" for the rod is far too flexible. They need to use a more rigid plastic. The first one I tried inserting simply broke off where the plastic is fused on. If they reduced the height of the rod ever so slightly just at the last 3mm of the tip they could get two fusion points instead of one, similar to how the tweezers at designed.Second, this does not appear to work on a SAK Ranger. Even though it's a larger knife, the hole for the toothpick seems to taper and the ferro rod easily gets stuck. The hole for the tweezers is even smaller. This did fit in a "standard," larger SAK and it does throw decent sparks. Mostly disappointed in the cheapness of the plastic part (their fault) and that it doesn't fit into the Ranger model (not really their fault).

As other reviewers have noted, these are very fragile. Slice a piece of wood, popsicle stick sized, and support it. It’s very soft because it throws a ton of sparks. If you have trouble with Ferro rods, this will if that. Use the backing the saw blade with a Huntsman snd you would be hard pressed not to get a fire going in 2 minutes. Collect a few pieces of fat wood in an old mint tin. A small piece cut into a feather stick will catch on the first or second strike.

I've had the same stick in my victorinox for a few months now, and have started about a dozen fires with ZERO issues or breaking. These are small and could be fragile if you're an ogre. I've heard of people braking theirs left and right, BUT if you support the end of the stick with under tip of the finger (like the meaty part) and strike the tip of the stick you'll get consistent sparks with no risk of breaking the stick.

You have to read the instruction manual for how to strike them without breaking but if you do, you’ll be fine. Loved being able to throw one in my SAK and have the fire option. They fit great in my normal SAKa, but I had to trim the end of one of them to fit in my ranger grip SAK. Super easy to add into your SAK’s tooth pick slot.

The point of any SAK is utility. So if you can add viable features to them, why not? These are expensive, but they do work as directed. They don't fit all models without some modification. The directions try to cover all iterations and wind up being a bit confusing. Better to try it first and then modify as directed for your particular knife. It's nobody's fault....there are a LOT of SAK models.

Received the Firefly ferro rods for my Swiss Army Knife, Huntsman. Very nice, it has been much fun practicing with it.FYI, the text on the package is incorrect, it reads “Superior quality flint”, truly this is not flint. Folks think a ferro rod is flint, it is not. Flint, more common in the USA is Chert, is an inert stone; itself cannot spark. Flint/Chert is used for striking and scraping the steel in the flint and steel technique. Using the flint on high carbon steel produces hot shards flying from the steel producing sparks. The flint itself does not spark, it cannot, only the steel produces sparks. Firefly, although an outstanding ferro rod for the Swiss Army knife, absolutely is not a flint, more it is as the steel. Reason I mention this is quite often I am reading posts calling ferro rods flint; quite incorrect. Many folks do not understand the concept of flint and steel nor ferro rod and striker.

This is a perfect way to add a Ferro rod to your Swiss army knife. Just swap out the toothpick, and you are good to go. Will only fit on the mid size or larger models (81mm +) but you want them that size for outdoors use anyway. And you will probably want a corkscrew model because you can get the fire starter kindling that fits into the corkscrew as well. Look for a Huntsman, a Trekker or similar Swiss army knife. The wood saw will make an excellent striker for these rods. Just remember that they are brittle and always strike on the narrow edges. Very reliable way to start a camp fire, with a little bit of practice.
