Was disappointed that I could only get a small. My pony is 41” tall and needs an XS so it’s to big in the ears and almost too big to do up snug enough

I like to ride through the forestry, and this time of year means midges everywhere 🙄 This was easy to put on, didn't freak him out, and the fringe kept his nose free from the pesky b*****s 😉It was worth the money for the peace we enjoy on our rides.

PROS: High UV protection (one of my boys has blue eyes, so I really appreciate this); stiffer net material and well-designed darts keep net away from horses’ eyes; cushioned poll and forehead area seems very comfortable and not scratchy; ears are good-sized for both my horses; nose fringe length and softness both excellent and highly effective; they have been really durable and wash up very well (I either hand-wash or put in washer after closing velcro fasteners if extremely dirty - line dry).CONS: Strap fasteners (both for Horse and Cob) are way too long and not designed for trimming. They flap out by several inches just daring another horse to grab them.

I purchased two of these in Spring and they sure weren't cheap. I have held off on a review to determine whether they would hold up over time, though. It has been a couple of months of almost daily use now and, hands down, that higher initial cost was worth it! This fly mask outperforms every other that we've tried in both fit and performance. Both of our horses are really REALLY hard on fly masks. If they are uncomfortable in one, they will rip it off. They view the soft and cute spandex masks as a useless triviality. Crusaders are only a minor challenge to be overcome, used as a tug toy and then stomped into the mud. Of the 4-5 different brands and styles we've tried, this is the ONLY one that they immediately accepted and that they wear without any fuss at all.One horse has a rather large head (almost drafty for a QH) and the other is average sized (TWH x). This particular mask is very adjustable and fits both horses extremely well without gapping, overlaps or buckled, wrinkly fabric. The ears are super soft and not at all tight on either horse. The fleece across the poll and lining the nose has stayed soft even after multiple washings. The fleece edges and nose fringes have also stayed soft and are not pilled or frayed. The velcro is in perfect shape after hundreds of ons and offs. The black mesh over the face and eyes is stiff but smooth to the touch. It is also fine enough to keep tiny midges from getting through it. Unlike some other brands, the darts in the mesh are sewn in the *correct* location and consistently keep the mesh off of the face and well away from the eyes and eyelashes. We have had no rips, tears, fraying or loosening in the mesh for either mask. At dusk, neither horse is at all "jumpy" so their visibility through the mesh must be very good, too. The fabric underside lays under the jaw and well away from the throatlatch. When snugged up, there's no pressure on the rear of the jaw or the throat to interfere with normal grazing. We spray a bit of fly spray on the nose fringes before putting the masks on. That is probably unnecessary but it seems to keep flies, gnats and mosquitos from even *trying* to get to their noses or mouths. All in all, these masks were a great investment to keep our horses comfortable. YMMV, but I'm going to buy several spares...just in case. ;o)

I am on my second year using the same Shires Fly Masks with the ears and fringe. Love the fringe as they can swat flies and keep flies off their nose. I have one horse that didn't like the fringe, so I cut it off (in hind sight I should have let him learn to like it), but the other horses loved the fringe from the start. The orange and black masks have become faded (the orange), but they still work great. The velcro holds after a full season of use. I only had one tear up, and half the fringe came off, and one of the velcro straps under the chin. It was from rough play from another horse, but that mask still works if I need it. I have since bought another one this year that's grey and black. I haven't had to use it yet as the other ones are still working great! Love these masks!

I purchased the mask in PONY size for my 13hh large pony. I love the mask, it fits well and as other reviewers have said it is really well made. I also agree that it runs large, as my guy usually wears anywhere from large pony to Cob size and this fits him a little roomy but well. I am using it over a bridle so a little extra room is nice. See attached photos, he is actually wearing both his bridle and halter under the fly mask. If he was slightly more refined this mask would be too big. I don't think this will fit well on 10-12 HH sized ponies unless they have unusually large, draftier builds. My only complaint, and I'm not taking stars off for it... I ordered BLACK and got BLACK w/ ORANGE even though there are both options available for selection. I really wanted the solid black, and I paid more for this than I could have other places. I also needed it fast as the gnats have been really bad. I won't be returning it since it is a nice mask, but I would hope that the vendor will update their listing to reflect that solid black is not even available.

WOW!!! This is probably one of the nicest fly masks I have ever purchased! Firstly it arrived swiftly! When I opened it I was so pleasantly surprised at how well made this mask is. The mesh is super fine, soft and pliable with puckers to keep it off my horses eyes, There is a little orange trim on mine ( I ordered Cobb size) and it will actually serve to make us more visible on the trail. The fringe is beautiful and thick so I think it will hold up well. Another super nice feature that I didn't expect is there is a wonderful super soft lining inside the mask where it lays across the crown of the head and against the ears, so no rubbing problems possible! I bought it for stall use but its so great I am going to use it over the bridle for trail riding. The fit is perfect for my 14-3 hand spotted saddle horse. The double elastic closures are thick and secure well! The Shires brand is obviously a good one and I will be ordering their products in the future!
