Choosing the Correct Filter Size
Nominal Size vs. Actual Size
The nominal size is a shorthand number rounded to the nearest whole or half inch, normally in a larger font (ex: 16 x 20 x 1). Whereas the actual size is an exact measurement, normally in a smaller font, that depicts the filter's precise dimensions (ex: 15.50 x 19.50 x 0.75). All filters have both.
Measuring Your Air Filter
If your current air filter does not have a dimension listed on the frame, use a tape measure to record the width x length x depth to find the actual size. Then round these measurements up to the nearest inch to find a corresponding nominal size, which will be easier to locate when searching online.

I am replacing my filter labelled 18x18x1 (the actual size is 17.5" x 17.5" x 0.75")My research led me to Amazon for Filterbuy 18x18x1 Merv 11 (6 pack Gold). The item was described as actual size 17.75"x17.75"x0.75"). Their video showed 17.5"x17.5"x3/4- which was contradictory. The other brand sold by Amazon was 50% more expensive and $19 shipping cost on top.I decided to take my chance with Filterbuy with worst case scenario of returning the product, if it does not fit.It turned out that the actual size is 17.5"x17.5"x3/4" which is exactly what I was looking for. They are good quality filters, well packaged and easy to install. Totally recommend.EDITHappy to see that the product actual size has now been changed to 17.5"x17.5"x3/4.
