I purchased the Fender Pure Vintage 63 Precision Bass Pickup set to bring a customer's neglected '72 American Precision Bass back to life. The E&A side of the original split pickup had gone open, so to simplify repair I just bought a full set. The pickup set, as shipped, comes with the metal backing plate, foam blocks attached, wires soldered and pre-bent to fit the route cavity, pickup covers, and 4 new mounting screws. Took all of about 5 minutes to remove the set from the package until the pickups were mounted in the bass, wires ready to be soldered onto the volume pot. The kit comes with very clear wiring instructions, I put in new components of the values recommended (250K pots and 0.1microfarad tone capacitor) I couldn't be happier with the results. The bass sounds absolutely perfect to my ear, thick, rich, and growly with nice bite. (I found 80% tone to be my preference) I've played bass in country, pop, rock cover groups for over 40 years, and this tone really makes me smile. While I'm sure there are many other wonderful pbass pickups sets out there, I'm fairly certain any pbass fan would be quite happy with these. Oh, and they run quiet too.

These are nice P-Bass pickups. I replaced the stock pickups in my Squire Anniversary bass with these and they sound great. Much better than the stick pickups!

Best Fender precision pickup in my opinion. Super punchy in the mids. Way better than ‘62

I had a stock Fender alnico 5 pbass pickup in my Vintage V4 project. The bass was a little lacking, the rest was nice. I did put copper foil on the poles on the bottom and grounded them. (It's easy. Do it and it's dead silent.) Plugged into my ampeg. Holy moley! The most rich, round, sweet, airy, musical tone. Fender flats, absolutely heaven. Do yourself a favor, try them.

Such a big difference over the stock pickups. The biggest difference, aside from the overall punch, is; with the tone rolled all the way down, the clear articulation. Previously, with the tone rolled off, the notes were like muddy mush. NOW, it is voiced so clean.REALLY nice investment in these pick-ups.

These replaced pure vintage 58 pickups. The 63s are a direct replacement and include the metal plate under the pickups. The sound is fantastic and I am so glad I bought these.

I've been on quite a journey with Precision Bass pickups. What I've learned is that the natural character and voicing of your bass will have a huge impact on whether or not any given P pickup works. My ash Precision has a really aggressive upper mid thing going on. After seven or so pickup sets over two decades, I think the PV 63's may be the best balanced with my bass' baked-in sound. One mistake that I made over and over was trying to find a pickup that would soften or attenuate the aggressive frequencies. Ultimately, the Fender PV 63 worked best because it kicked up the bass and lower mids so that they could compete with its top-en snap rather than scooping anything out. It's the best my Precision has sounded since I bought it 20yrs ago -- balanced but still ballsy. Obviously, your mileage may vary. Unless you have an inherently dark bass with a lot of booty already on tap, these are worth a look. They are easily my favorite Precision pickups, and I've tried quite a few.I've tried them with Fender flats, Nickel Lo-Riders, and GHS pressurewounds. It has sounded phenomenal with each. As a matter of practice, I try out a few wiring harnesses with any new P pickup using gator clips and button crimps before soldering. The PV63's seemed to favor an AVRI '57 style harness with 250k audio pots and a 0.068uf cap, but that's just my personal taste.

First, I have no idea why I have been asked to star-rate this pickup for 'thickness'. Thickness of sound? I bought this pickup to replace the standard pickup in my Fender MIM Mustang bass. My hands are too small for a full-size bass so I play a short scale bass which has that characteristic 'hollow' sound. This pickup counteracts the hollowness and gives me the closest sound I'm going to get to a classic Fender Precision. It records beautifully and really makes the bass sit well in a mix.
