Iv owned and used a few of these for small maker projects in the past. It felt as if these were half finished or rushed through production. They seem to be missing some components, lack documentation, and do not work as nearly as well as some of the ones I have used in the past. For the price I didn't have super high hopes but hope none the less that these would at least be usable in some way shape or form. After about two hours of messing with them I tossed in the flag. When you purchase something at a low cost you have low expectation typically, with low expectations comes a low amount of tolerance and my frustration was not worth messing with these for too long. Companies who promote modules and sensors should be held to more accountability for their products. Too often have I purchased something like this due to false advertisement or exaggerated usability.

How complicated can this be? It didn't work out of the box. So I had to put on my engineering hat and figured out what was going on in the circuit. As one reviewer mentioned who gave it a one star review, there are no instructions, so I am here to help.The 4 pins include A0 for "setting" a bias point. G for ground, + for supply (5V, I am guessing), and D0 for analog out.The device consists of a dual comparator, the LM393. Two 100K resistors set the non inverting input bias at mid-supply on both comparators. The electret micophone output feeds the inverting input of one of the comparators (and A0). This particular comparator is acting as an amplifier, open loop (LOL). Really poor design...its screaming for a 499Kohm resistor from it's output to the inverting summing node.... to help stabilize the bias. I think it would be easy enough to tack one into the circuit if you have one laying around. I didn't try it. That would be between pins 1 and 2 of the LM393.So to properly bias this device to function, adjust the trim pot until the pin "A0" is near mid supply....so if the device is supplied with a 5V supply, you want to adjust the trim pot until A0 reads about 2.5V. Then it should start functioning. It amplifies, sure enough, gained up by the open loop gain of the comparator. It won't be super stable with temperature or supply voltage but so long as those things are pretty well controlled, you should be good to go. The second comparator drives an LED, so you can see it "flicker" on and off as it picks up sound. I give it 2 stars for the price and the quantity of "stuff" you get. They could have received three stars if they through in a 499kohm resistor from output to input on the amplifier comparator. :-)Post review: I recommend getting the electret version of this with the MAX4466 amplifier. Way better design and guaranteed almost to work right out of the box.
