It's a handy tools but have to use it carefully as going around, more room for user error. Not a tap and die replacement.

This thread repair tool works as advertised if not better! It is made of all steel so very rugged. Working on restoring an old 1978 Goldwing motorcycle, most parts are no longer made. I repaired 2 lower/forward engine hanger bolts (double thread stud) which also fasten the engine guard to the engine and frame. One of the tips was partially stripped from where the guard was put to use during an accident. All 4 threads were damaged from the engine guards resting on the threads for decades. At first I was cautious by continuously attaching the tool for every spec of damaged thread not wanting to start a new thread. Every time I lined up a tooth in a groove, the other tooth lined up perfectly in another groove to guide it. It was a bit time consuming but it worked. Then after done sometimes screwing the nut on was a bit tight in spots, this is when I just attached the tool and traced the entirety of each thread in one shot, both bolts are perfect again! Just put your bolt in a vise with a sliced piece of auto hose around it, oil the threads, check that both teeth are lined up in good threads, tighten, then begin rotating the tool through the damaged area. The tool works in push fashion so you should always be pushing the tooth across the bad thread, not pulling it. In other words the bad piece of thread to repair should be out in front of the tool rotating towards it. Need to come at the damaged thread from other direction, simply turn the tool around. It will either bend/reshape threads or in some cases slightly shave it so be aware of little pieces. Comes complete in easy to open and store package along with clear instructions. Money well spent, easy 5 *'s.

Used it to clean bad threads on a motorcycle transmission shaft (unable to get the nut started onto the shaft). In less than a minute I had the threads cleaned and the left hand nut on properly. This tool works much better than a die. It was able to clean/straighten the threads on the end of the shaft. I would recommend this tool. A must have it you ever have a nut that tries to cross thread.

Works well at chasing threads, but you only get a few degrees of rotation if your wheel hub extends beyond brake rotor. The hub prevents tool from making a full rotation. Works fantastically on a bolt, but not so well on a stud where access is limited.

I had a bolt (more like a threaded pin) that held the gear assembly to the jack frame on an old Craftsman Model 328.12002 Floor Jack (Made in Japan). It's easily 32+ years old and I rebuilt the hydraulic cylinder. I buggered the threads on the pin by stupidly cross-threading it. It only has about 6 threads on the end of the pin, to begin with. If your lead-in threads are damaged you should probably place the tool near the bolt head on the good threads and back it off in an attempt to 'un-crush' and separate lead-in threads. I ran the tool over it about 6 times and it removed quite allot of material. I kept finding thread area that was compressed in crushed into the next thread, but I continued placing the tool's cutting tooth (only one tooth contacted the thread area in my case since my threads were so short) between the crushed threads and running it over and over. (I believe my thread is M18x1.5) Eventually, it worked and I was able to reassemble the jack and tighten the bolt. I was actually amazed it worked since I was growing pessimistic after the first few passes. I just snugged it down. I didn't torque it to 80ft lbs or anything. I think most of the stress on the pin is a shearing force. If it doesn't hold, I'll weld the bolt head to the frame and hope the ram seal lasts another 30+ years. (Picture is the 'before' picture...) I didn't remember to take an 'after' pic. before I assembled it. (sorry) Bottom Line- Nice Tool. Well worth the dough and worth a try.

This product works great if you have damaged threads or threads that have rolled. The design of the product allows you to start in the middle of the thread and work up or down, where a die will only start at the end (if the end has damaged threads, then it is hard to get the die started!)Watch out as there is a similar, but smaller version of this that does not fit up to 3/4" threads. If you buy the similar smaller version, there might be a gap where it is too small to fit the threads and the NES2 is too big.
