First things first, why would you need to have an airway kit at home? The answer is simple: preparedness. Emergencies can happen anytime and having the right tools on hand can make a significant difference in critical situations. How to use them correctly? To insert an oropharyngeal airway in an adult, open the patient's mouth using the "crossed finger" technique and insert the airway with the curved end pointing upwards towards the roof of the mouth. Once the airway reaches the back of the throat, rotate it 180 degrees so that the curved end points downwards, following the natural curvature of the tongue. For children and infants, insert the airway directly with the curve following the natural curvature of the tongue without the need for rotation. Ensure the flange rests against the lips and the tip is in the oropharynx (you might simply think of this as the throat), not pushing the tongue back into the throat. Also very important to remember: if you are the only one to help, you must always call 911 first before starting basic life support!After working for two years in the ER, I found it essential to have an airway kit in my home. You might call it being a little too obsessive, but you never know when you might need one of these. Although I have never used them (and I hope I never have to), they give me a kind of peace of mind. I also hope you never have to use these. Stay healthy!
