The reed sounded like crap

My son has been playing the oboe for a year. He’s 11 and isn’t great about protecting his reed, so this plastic reed has saved us from having to buy multiple wood reeds. It doesn’t have a beautiful sound and it’s not adjustable like a wooden reed is, but it’s good for a beginner. It’s not indestructible either, but it’s less fragile than a wooden reed.

I'm an amateur oboe player, but I play a lot and go through reeds a lot so I thought I would try this...just to see what it was. It's worth a negative review, alas.More technically: it "crows" a robust A or if you push it, B (not C s it should). It sounds really, really awful. Since it came about 73mm long, I tried trimming it, but could not get a stable crow out of it, and the pitches at the top of the second octave tend to blur together. It is very thin where I would expect it to be thicker, and it indeed looks like it was made for one-time sales. If I was starting out, I probably would take one of the less expensive cane reeds and figure out how to adjust it. That takes time and patience ... or a good teacher... but this one, I recommend, is a dead end.

My daughter practices about 3 times a week, and this lasted about a week. It has a decent sound when functional. I wanted to have this plastic reed as a back up if we ran out of natural reeds. So much for that!
