I'd recommend the smaller, cheaper gemstone spectroscopes. I thought this would be an upgrade, but some issues:- Edges of slit are so, so, so very rough. Like, cut with a hacksaw. Curiously, the perpendicular sides are flat. Regardless, this means you will have tons of lines running through your objective. It sucks.- It is adjustable, but you will HAVE to adjust it every. single. time. Stowing it anywhere will make it go out of alignment/your previous settings. Can't even stow it in the wood box carrier without having to collapse it.- This could be a great instrument for someone in a developing country or something. It's made with like, straw string typing the prism into place...

This product is defect, realy bad. Some glue seem to obstruct 2/3 of the prism. Bad quality control... It's the first time that I want to return an item buy on Amazon...

The slit is a little rough, but it works and is useful for demonstrations.

I think it is better suited as a conversation piece or display item than for scientific measurement. It doesn't have any scale markings. That said it's very well built and aesthetically pleasing. It works as advertised.

works as described but harder to use on gemstones due to size. it is well built and I like the ability to focus and the slit adjustment. it comes with the box as pictured which is nice.

This is a modern cut at a brass pocket spectroscope with glass optics. It has an adjustable slit at the front and the body extends to focus. One can look at a florescent light and easily see the different spectra from the phosphors each maker uses. It's precise enough to see absorption spectra. This is not a toy/student version. It's more of a low end lab instrument. The optics could be damaged if dropped.
