I was really trying to solve a problem—what to do with the litter of old fluorescent bulbs leaning precariously into odd corners of my house. Toxic to throw into landfills, but no regular recycling of household waste beyond paper, plastics and cardboard out here in the hinterlands. When we shifted to led tube lighting our litter became a serious problem. The majority were 8’ tubes, but a few were 4’. I was thankful to see this option appear, and—though it seemed expensive—it was a convenient way to solve an increasingly burdensome problem. I asked if 4’ tubes could be included with 8’ tubes, and was assured that they could, and so I ordered the 8’ box. By my count, and their description, I should be able to get our entire pile in this box and off to a safe recycling facility. It didn’t quite work that way.The box came promptly. It has to be unfolded and opened up, which was, in itself, a slightly difficult job with two people and a broom stick to get it to stay unfolded and force the internal baffling to open up and stay open. But we got it done, and put one end cap on (these are nicer and safer than folding box ends, but—since they immediately stick securely on, are less forgiving (and that’s presumably part of what makes this box safer for the hazardous materials to travel through UPS). Then we started loading tubes. The stated capacity requires VERY tight packing of the tubes—we were afraid we would break tubes and were afraid to overpack. It also turns out to be nearly impossible to get two 4’ tubes into an 8’ box end to end, and we gave it up. In the end, we couldn’t get them all in, and were left with 2 4’ tubes which are leaning a bit less precariously in a corner. I’m thinking of ordering a 4’ box and giving my friends the opportunity to help me fill it up.Return shipping is included in the price, and was easy to arrange—a phone call to set up a UPS pickup. They will ask for a weight—I just guessed. Since I knew when they were coming, I just leaned that 8’ box up against the wall on my porch on the day—and that litter disappeared!
