The photo shows what I found when unwrapping the product. It's a minor issue I can correct, but for the money they charge, you would think they do a better job on seal development.

I use this container to store my food when I'm dispersed camping in black bear country. It's convenient to gather all the food and keeps critters out but it lost its first fight with a bear. If unattended, bears can chew through the lid. Still served it's purpose as a place to put food that's not inside the car. I'd much rather sacrifice this yellow bucket to the bear than have my car door peeled off like a can of beans. I'll probably end up buying another one if I can't identify a better solution.

I needed a weatherproof container to leave outside with animal feed in it and it works well for this. The first time I tried to open it I had a lot of trouble; I didn’t realize how deep the lid was. I also make sure I don’t screw it on tight because it’s awkward to handle. I left one too loose and ants got in but I’ve since learned the right tightness for me to open yet keep bugs out. I bought two of them and have had them several months through torrential rains and now extreme heat (110 yesterday), so far so good. I have tried metal barrels, big trash barrels and other plastic barrels but none have worked this well.

The containers are #2 HPDE plastic so they are food safe. Its the same stough plastic milk jugs are made from.I'm uesing them as fermenters. The first challenge is a typical grommet for a air lock won't work the lid is to thick. Next this lid is kinda of a pain to remove once its tight. A 2x4 , 2ft long fits in to the slot on the lid making this task easy. The gasket is not air tight its a open cell foam and not a good choice for fermenting, besides we have no clue what glue was used. I removed the gasket and replaced it with BPA free 3/8 ID vinal tubing. I sliced it open length wise so it would fit around the lip of the tub with a little food safe silicone to hold it in place. and seal the ends together. Even with the effort and modifications they are still cheaper than buying something labeled as a fermenter at this size.

I am using these to store water in a greenhouse. I needed a very specific size to fit the top row of water barrels that I’m using to maintain heat during the winter. Normally I would have ordered metal barrels but these were the perfect size. I wish these came in black to absorb the heat better, but they do add fun color to my greenhouse! I specifically avoided softer rubber like Rubbermaid because it might break down over the years. This is so sturdy I imagine it will last quite a while! Note that you could absolutely sit on them if you wanted to use them for storage combined with a small stool.As for water storage- they work great for my purpose, which does not involve any movement after they are filled. I did notice that if you fill them pretty full and are moving them, a little splashes from the top. I thought I had the lid screwed on very tight, but it’s possible I didn’t. Just be aware if you’re filling it with something and plan to move it and wouldn’t want it to leak.

Perfect size for fermenting whole heads of cabbage. Make sure to use non-iodized salt. That is key to getting perfect non-slimy brine. Use 1 tablespoon (standard measuring spoon) to one liter of water. Use more rather than less. A little horseradish root, quince - 2 or 3 pieces sliced (for color), some dill stalks with seed. I used the larger 30 gallon version of this barrel with flat head cabbage (total of 18 pieces). Came out perfect in about three weeks at room temperature. I used this 20 gallon barrel with larger, much heavier type of cabbage (9 large heads) and 18 gallons of water. I stored at room temperature for at least 6 weeks. So much better tasting then typical sauerkraut and perfect for cabbage rolls. I especially like the lid on these containers. With a small piece of 2x4 cut to size you can open and close lid very tightly. I removed the black foam gasket tape from the inside of lid though. That's absolutely not food safe. I was so happy to find these containers. Beats fermenting cabbage in small 5 gallon buckets. Even with all that weight I can move it around slightly and it feels solid as a rock. I will buy again in the future as gift for relatives. One last thought: The container and the lid both have minor plastic flash and relatively sharp edges from molding process. Amazon sells plastic deburring tool (about six bucks) which will clean out the edges nicely. You will then have a perfect container.
