About this item

  • Cobalt steel tools are similar to high-speed steel, but with more cobalt for improved performance when cutting harder metals such as stainless steel or nickel alloys
  • Gold oxide is a thinner oxide surface treatment than black oxide typically used to identify cobalt steel tools; performance is similar to uncoated tools
  • Round shanks allow use with a wide variety of toolholding systems
  • When run in a counterclockwise direction (right-hand cut) spiral fluted tools evacuate chips up and out of the cut to reduce clogging
  • Manufactured to National Aerospace standard 907

Made of heat resistant cobalt and ground to a heavy duty 135° split point. Common flute and overall length for minimal adjustment during tool changes. Precision ground for high degree of concentricity between shank and body diameter. Ideal for drilling in tough, high tensile strength materials. Expands the size range capacity of a portable drill chuck. Common flute and overall length for minimal adjustment during tool changes. Precision ground for high degree of concentricity between shank and body diameter. Ideal for drilling in low and medium tensile strength materials.

I was hesitant to buy a brand I wasn't familiar with, but this is one great drill. Went through the stainless I bought it for like butter. I can't testify to its long range durability as I probably won't use it much, but it did the job it was intended for very well.

This 5/8 inch bit is NOT M42 COBALT! It's M35! Therfore these bits are over-priced. So 2 stars lost for being inferred in the product description. See my photos of the packaging that clearly states it's M35 Cobalt. Also, The manufacturer's crappy sharpening left heavy burrs on the cutting edges... but I could easily repair this issue myself. On the positive side, it cuts very well in Aluminum but I haven't yet tried Stainless-Steel or hardened steel alloys. Also the bit is perfectly straight (zero run-out) and dead on 5/8".

The Drill America 5/8" High Speed Steel Black & Gold KFD Drill Bit could not enlarge an existing 1/2 inch hole in a 1/4 inch thick piece of corten steel and the point was destroyed in trying. This D/ACO Series Cobalt Drill Bit (at twice the price) did the job.

Bought a cheaper bit 1st - it failed immediately so I ordered this bit from Drill America. This bit drilled the 16 holes I needed and was still going strong at the end. Drill America bits stand up to the test.

Do not buy this incredibly bad drill bit. Bought it to drill a large hole in 1/4” mild steel plate after 10 minutes of drilling the bit did not begin to drill through plate. I drilled a 3/8” starter hole with a bit from Walmart and then tried this bit again but it did nothing. Total waste of my money for Avery expensive piece of junk!

Ok, maybe not the noggin! But for drilling steel this bit worked as a cobalt bit should. No issues, and it cut fast. Drilled through 1/4 plate steel pretty quickly using a 20 volt cordless drill. Quality seems good and was cheaper than big brand names. Like the reduced shank so i could use in 1/2" drill. Nothing worse then having a bunch of drill bits with the size worn off from slippage, so pick up a couple.

Lasted about 2 hours of use against hardened steel before starting to dull.Would last a lot longer against mild steel and even longer with soft metals.

Used this to drill 18 holes in 1/4" thick A36 steel. I did not use a pilot hole or any pre-drilled hole. I used the cutting fluid and stopped 6 to 8 times per hole to add the cutting fluid. The last hole still drilled fine. Don't know how many more holes the bit has left but this was all I needed for the project. The diameter of bit and hole was right on .687". This is a quality tool.
