Product Description

Besides a felting needle, a felting pad is your second most important tool when needle felting. A felting pad serves as an underlay for your project, and protects your needles and table top or lap.

There are several different types of underlays available, non of which are better than the other. It is simply a matter of preference.

it has excellent elasticity and does not change shape even after persistent pressing. It is a supplementary mat suitable for tight rolling, with a higher resistance to stress so it wears out less easily.  However, due to its excellent elasticity, the mat usually bounce slightly follow with needle movement, it makes wool felting slower.

One of the best needle felting underlay is the sponge.  Of course you could use just a big, yellow sponge – we have one in the garage for car washing. But there are some available for needle felting purposes. They do not have the sticky/velvety feel of the yellow sponge. They feel drier and are sometimes a bit softer. Technically, they are also a foam product, but they are much softer than the last option, so they are categorized as a sponge.

They are usually thicker than the foam options and therefore, can be easily used to work on your lap. I do recommend having a towel between the underlay and you leg, just in case. They also come in a variety of sizes and colors and do not make any noise when felting.

This also gets the bonus point due to its ability to serve as a needle holder as well.

Tips and Tricks for Needle Felting

What is Needle Felting?

In a nutshell, it's the process of transforming wool into 3D objects using a barbed needle.

When you felt wool, you're agitating the fibers so they bond together, creating a solid fabric. If you've ever felted any of your knitting projects, you're already familiar with the process — except that you probably used a washing machine with really hot water to get the fibers to bond. Needle felting mimics that process, but instead of agitating the wool with hot water, you're doing it with an extra-sharp needle.

What You Need

Needle felting is usually done with a kind of wool called roving, but you can also use wool in other forms, like batting.

The needle you'll use for felting has sharp, barbed blades designed to agitate the wool fibers.

You'll need a special felting surface to avoid poking your fingers, legs or other body parts. Sponges and foam pads work well for needle felting. Just make sure your surface is thick

What To Make with Needle Felting

Animals are a popular choice with needle felters, the special felting needles create a fuzzy effect that looks like fur. But you don't have to limit yourself to stand-alone animals or other items: You can also use a flat object like a scarf as a base for your felted objects. Try needle felting onto a fabric cuff to add color, or needle felt a heart or another shape you like onto a plain sweater.

I'm new to needle felting and purchased this pad. I cover it with an acrylic felt sheet. It's much better than working on those small white blocks that come with some needle felting kits. I like the size and the feel of the material. It's easier to use for any project.

Bought this foam pad for reverse felting because the wool pad's fibers get pulled through with my colored wools (go-figure).... Aggressive needles will grate this foam like parmesan cheese. Used for two small projects, and 25% of the face is worn down into a pit. Love the idea, but perhaps an open celled rubber-foam would prove more resilient.

I use this foam to line aluminum camera cases for custom accessories for my telescope. With a sharp, long box cutter, this cuts easily into the shapes I need. It is the perfect depth for those standard cases. For this purpose, I highly recommend.

Excellent ,dense pad for felting. Very happy with the quality. If you felt, I just learned a way to keep the pad clean, buy a square of felt in a craft store and use it on top of the foam.

This foam pad is not dense foam - it's just foam. It works, but it hasn't held up as well as the Kaizen foam that I've ordered in the past. It also likely wouldn't hold up that well as a seat cushion because it is so soft. I've found that soft foam breaks down very quickly from needle felting and I end up with bits of gray foam in the piece. (Even Kaizen foam eventually does this, but it takes much longer to break down.)
