It did not work with my Sony 8mm video camera but I found another device with multiple cables that did work.

The USB protocol and the IEEE 1394 are different protocols and this cable is just a direct wire-to-wire connector. I should have read the reviews before buying this. As others have said, I don't know why these cables are on the market or even exist. But then, if they can sell enough of them and not all of them are returned, there is money to be made.
