About this item

  • Davis Rudder Position Indicator
  • Attaches to Steering Wheel with Self-Adhesive Pad
  • Gives Instant Visual Reference of Rudder Angle to Safely Enter or Leave Dock or Mooring. Ideal for Tight Spaces and Safely Picking Up Water Skiers
  • Weatherproof and Sun Proof Housing
  • Suitable for Boats with Mechanical and Single Station Hydraulic Steering Systems

The Davis Rudder Position Indicator gives instant visual reference of the rudder angle. This is important information, especially when moving in and out of your berth, drawing alongside another boat, picking up a skier, mooring, or any other "close call" situations. The Rudder Position Indicator has a pointer that swings a full 30° with each revolution on the steering wheel providing you with an easy-to-see reference point. The Indicator mounts directly to the hub of the boat's steering wheel with a self-adhesive pad. Rugged, hermetically sealed, weatherproof, and sunproof housing ensures long life. Requires no cables, adjustments, or electricity. Gravity power makes it simple and service-free. Measures about 2" dia. Suitable for boats with mechanical and single station hydraulic steering systems.

Turn the wheel 2 or 3 times and it’s out of calibration. Total waste of money!

My rudder indicator stopped working on my Sea Ray Sundancer 310. Rather than spend a small fortune fixing the indicator, I purchased this indicator and mounted it to the helm.Installation was easy and it works really well. I used Velcro so I could easily remove it or re-calibrate.When I took it out of the box, it wasn't centred. To center the indicator quickly, I just rolled it on a table to centre the indicator and then ensured my engines were centered prior to mounting.

The instructions acknowledge that the rudder position becomes inaccurate and suggest attaching with Velcro (NOT provided) if that is a problem. Since it becomes inaccurate in a matter of 30 minutes of use, of course it is a problem. Really pathetic that they don't include velcro.

This is working for me with a little work. Before I go out I check the accuracy. Most of the time it is right on. A couple times I had to reposition it. That small amount of effort is worth it. Backing out of the marina is tough sometimes. Knowing if the rear unit is straight is a must.

In my case, my hydraulic steering wheel slips so much that the gauge calibration is lost within a few full turns of the wheel. However, the gauge itself works great. So, if you have a repeatable steering setup like a cable driven steering system or some other type of mechanical steering that allows the steering wheel to reliably return to the same position, I'm sure the gauge will work great for you.As to why my hydraulic steering slips so much, my guess is that my steering wheel uses an impeller pump of some type which works fine for steering, but due to the impeller pump's inherent internal leakage, does cause the wheel position to shift over time. In my case, after just a few full turns of the wheel.Bottom line, I would say that this gauge isn't really compatible with the typical hydraulic steering wheel, but I'm still giving it 5 stars because ir does work very well if your steering is repeatable.

This is a great little aid to know which direction the wheel is turned we leave the dock or go to depart a lock. Easy to apply and use.

Love this product. Own a 21 ft 30-year-old inboard/outboard boat with 2 1/2 turns steering lock to lock. The $50 CDN price tag is, in my opinion, excessive and it almost stopped me from purchasing it. However, after installation, I'll just grit my teeth and accept it as it now lets me know at a glance where my outdrive is pointing which is critical when swinging the stern to line up with boat lift with current and wind pushing. The unit is accurate and responsive and was easy to set up and mount.

Can't rate the adhesion because I used my own velcro which came off the steering wheel in the hight heat. Now I only mount it to the wheel with the velcro when docking into my slip. I easily recalibrate the unit while approaching my marina and place it on the hub of the steering wheel. Works perfectly. To initially calibrate the unit it should be held vertically and continually rotated until it until both white white indicators line up at the top of the unit. May take quite a few turns but it can be done. After the initial calibrations its a snap to recalibrate. Works well for me. Now I always know the position of my outdrive at a glance.

This is a neat little tool. Many pleasure crafts don't have rudder indicators, not so crucial when propelling forward but when making an approach to a buoy or jetty and that it is time to take the way off the vessel and propel astern - that's where this tool becomes handy, or else you'll find out the true position of your rudder when your bow swing suddenly port or stbd....when you don't want it to, because you're in tighter quarters. Easiest thing to install (takes less then 5 secs).

Brilliant device no power needed keeps working no matter what. Just what I like cheap when compared to the alternatives, reliable.

I had read the other reviews. I mounted initially using velcro instead of the adhesive tape it came with. It has come out of adjustment every time I have used my boat so far. Sometimes by an extreme amount. Couple times I really needed it, it let me down. I think it's mainly been happening from turning the wheel quickly, however rough water might be a factor as well. The indicator looks good, I like the port and starboard one turn hash marks. My steering wheel tilts and I had it close to vertical. Will continue tinkering with it. As of now hard to count on the reading after even a minimal amount of maneuvering. UPDATE: Reset it my next time out and has been working very well for several uses.UPDATE UPDATE: Has continued to work without issue for several years now. I wouldn't want to lose it.
