From the Manufacturer

The Planet Waves 3 + 3 format Auto Trim Tuning Machines are precision tuners that automatically cut the excess string while changing strings, eliminating the need for string cutting tools and making string changes easy and fast. The 18:1 ratio worm gear construction ensures greater precision than standard tuners and ensure tuning stability even during the hardest playing. Includes 6 tuners and mounting hardware. Chrome finish. 3 + 3 design for instruments that have 3 tuning machines on each side of the headstock.

Ordinarily, restringing is a tedious chore, requiring extra tools such as string cutters in order to get the job done. Planet Waves Auto-Trim tuners eliminate this need by automatically trimming the excess string from the tuning post as you increase the tension on the string. The Auto-Trim's rugged, die-cast housing and precision machined 18:1 bevel and worm gears assure in-tune performance after even the most aggressive playing or tremolo use. The tuners include a string clamp that securely hold the string in place, eliminating the need for multiple wraps around the tuning post. Simply insert the string, tighten the clamp, tune it up to the proper tension and allow the auto-trim feature to remove the excess string. Changing strings has never been easier. A Ned Steinberger Design.

First, the head slapper: why did I take so long to discover locking tuning machines! I really dislike changing strings, but these make the job easy and fast. Not having to wind multiple turns, and carefully using some variation on a locking knot to reduce slippage is great. Imagine not needing a string winder/unwinder to quickly change strings, and you get the bonus of the string being clipped flush with the tuner shaft. No tool string changes! A really big deal that you have to try to realize the difference that it makes. The other big deal is tuning stability. Having the string locked in place is only part of the advantage. The other is not having several wraps around the tuning peg that have to settle in over time. Just install new strings, do the initial string stretch, and the guitar stays in tune. It is also worth mentioning that the smooth 18:1 gears, with no slippage or slop make tuning up so easy. Nothing bad to say about this product. Okay, the color clash of all but the black sets is something, but you will get over it when you experience how well they work.

I got an inexpensive, but very nice looking, sounding, and feeling Dean XZ. The one thing about the guitar that definitely needed an upgrade was the tuners. I decided to go with these Planet Waves Locking tuners with auto-clip, viewing the auto-clip feature as a bonus (I just like locking tuners, and these were less expensive than all the others I found). Well, the clipping feature works great (except on the thinnest (10) string it did not work, I guess the string was just too thin for it).So in short:- They look great- They were super easy to install (fit perfectly in the old holes - just had to line them up by eye, tighten the nut on top, then put the little screw on the back side using just a regular small screw driver)- They work great - just slip your string through the hole, pull through tight, then tighten the locking wheel on bottom side. Tune to pitch and the string cuts and pops off about the time you come into tune. So easy!- They are less expensive the competition.

Background: I'm a complete guitar n00b, barely 6 weeks playing.I really suck at changing strings. I am not sloppy and I am not impatient, but I find the process unnerving. After the last time that I broke a string during a simple change I couldn't take it anymore and decided to pick up locking tuning machines. To my delight, I found that the auto-trim tuning machines had dropped in price.Installation was absolutely painless. I probably spent more time digging for the drill bit that I needed since my screw holes did not match. I would say that even including measuring and drilling, it was less than 5 minutes per tuner. And oh do they work. The first snip (6th string) was a bit scary. By the time I had done the 5th string I had figured out how far out of tune each string would be after the string snip. I actually missed the snip on the 4th string, turned it back a little bit, pushed the string down so it would touch the edge, tried it again and it worked. So yeah, you have to make sure that when you start turning it, the string is going to hit the cutting edge.Tuning was a non-event, this is probably my fastest string change and tune to date. And yes, I still need to fill and clean the old screw holes, but this is an inexpensive guitar and it doesn't bother me.Would I buy these again? Absolutely, I am already looking forward to pick up the inline-6 version for my Squier Affinity Telecaster. The only real question is if I'll let these go when I get rid of this guitar or will I switch back the original tuners so I can reuse these on another guitar.

I love locking tuners. They're one of the best things you can do for your guitar. Especially if, like me, you have way too many of them and you're really lazy about restringing. With locking tuners, restringing a guitar takes - at most - 10 minutes. If you're trying to go slow.I have Sperzel locking tuners on all my other guitars, but figured I'd give these a try - the auto-trim seemed interesting. To be honest, I don't feel that it's a vital feature. I did see another reviewer say it didn't always work for him, and another reviewer wrote about holding the string a certain way. I didn't do anything special and it just worked. I can see how you might need to bend the string back a bit. But again, as I said, not a big deal. Now, I did have one string pop back out on me while tuning. AFTER being cut. With my other locking tuners, hand-tightening the nut is enough to keep the string in place. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, or maybe these guys just need to be tightened extra-hard. Once again, probably not an actual problem and I was able to get the string back in there and it hasn't popped back out yet, so...One thing about replacing your guitar's tuning pegs with locking tuners - and this is true for the six guitars I've done this on (which were a mix of acoustic, electric and a banjo) and no matter which brand I use. I've never, ever been able to use the original screw holes that the original tuning pegs used. This means you'll be drilling tiny holes in your guitar. I've also never had the good fortune of having the new tuners cover up the original holes, so I've been putting the original screws back in. Looks less silly than having holes in the headstock. Again, this is not specific to these guys, but I thought anyone considering this operation might want to know.UPDATE: I have now used several sets of strings with these tuners, and WITHOUT FAIL one of them eventually flies out while tuning, usually after the thing has cut the excess string off so it's REALLY HARD to get the thing back in there. This is even worse with coated strings. I find that I absolutely cannot manually tighten the nuts, I have to use pliers to give it an extra turn.
