What is Cyanotype? It is a mid-1800’s early alternative photographic process invented by Sir John Herschel, in England. Now it is used as an everyday art material for all ages.

How does it work? The Cyanotype Store makes pre-coated 100% natural fiber paper creates a sun-sensitive printable surface. To make a Cyanotype print, start by choosing a design or object you want to print (ideas: ferns and flowers, photographic negatives, designs printed on transparency film and found objects like lace, beach glass, and any objects large or small). Next, follow these steps to make a Cyanotype Print:
1) Lay your design on the pre-coated Cyanotype Paper
2) Place it in the sun or under a UV (Ultra Violet) lamp for 10-15 minutes
3) Rinse the exposed Cyanotype Paper in water for 5 minutes. Results: Cyanotype creates an aesthetically brilliant Prussian Blue color around the design area. The design remains the original color of the paper. White, violet, green, blue, yellow and red are some cyanotype paper color options (Also sold on Amazon). See images for print examples.

Unique attributes of Cyanotype Store Cyanotype Paper: Made in the USA, non- toxic (ideal for all ages), environmentally safe, easy to teach, archival-a fine art material, paper is 100lb weight-heavy and durable for repeated rinsing, no darkroom is needed, conforms to ASTM D4236 (certified as a safe art material for children). Also, AMCI (Art and Creative Material Institute) Certified.

The paper is not coated properly; spots and smears appear on both sides of the sheets both before and after exposure. This company used to carry a good product that made beautiful prints. For the last couple of years, their paper, particularly the blue paper, does not print well at all, the edges of the sheets are cut improperly and now this. I have never seen anything like this before.

I have used several other brands of prepared cyanotype paper and fabric under a full spectrum fluorescent light with good results. I was not able to get even a faint image on this paper despite numerous tests. Perhaps this works in strong sun but because I need to work in variable conditions, this was a waste of money for me.
