The Creality CR-Scan Ferret Pro 3D Scanner seemed like an interesting technology and was indeed an adventure. Most of my 3D printing has been on a mini-3D printer and I got into the Ferret Pro expecting the device to enhance my capabilities. The scanner comes in an attractive zippered pouch with cut-outs for each of the components. The first thing you notice when you open the pouch is that there is a lot there, with six pieces plus cables to connect them, plus a manual and sheets of circular stickers. The cables are in labeled bags and it’s essential – at least at first - to pay attention to manual and the cable labels as you connect everything. The scanner can connect to a smart phone, which provides greater mobility, but can also connect via WiFi directly to a computer. It worked well in both settings, though I found myself preferring the direct WiFi connection to a computer, which facilitated my processing the scans. My initial inclination was to scan some larger geometric items , but I quickly found/learned that the device is limited in scanning flat and solid-color areas unless those circular are placed on the item at regular intervals. The scanner worked best scanning areas with lots of texture or color variation, and placing the item on a turntable produced the best results when practicable. Scanning was a slow process using a turntable. The scanner can lose its place and you have to go backwards to let it recognize an area before proceeding.I scanned a small (~3inch tall pie bird) which shows the scanner’s picking up smooth texture with only color variation, and a scan of a small replicate of Michelangelo’s Pieta showing scan with texture but no color variation. You don’t get greater precision when you scan a smaller item closeup. Despite the large variation in texture on the Pieta, the scanner was limited by it’s ~0.1 inch precision. In all settings it is a challenge to cover all angles and areas on any scan and you see the scanned item as a shell of color. The Ferret Pro 3D Scanner excelled in scanning human faces, probably because of all the variation in both color and texture. This was the most fun with the scanner. Bring on the custom bobbleheads!Overall, there was a learning and practice curve on the Creality Ferret Pro 3D Scanner, but it will turn out to be a fun accessory once you’ve learned the device and developed your scanning technique.

This item is not compatible with iphone 16 pro max, there may be future updates for compatibility, but the most recent version (updated 30th October for iOS 18 compatibility) is not compatible, the iphone never connects wirelessly despite connected to the "wifi bridge"- loading the app just states "no scanner connected", and USB-C connection is not supported.

Un able to install the software to my phone. Every time I downloaded had to go to play store to install more software just to try and open what I downloaded in the first place and still couldn't get anything to even turn the darn thing on. Thought this would be an easy plug and play, to point and scan, but no. I dont have the time or patience to deal with this.

Got this Ferret Pro to scan some skateboard parts for my electric skateboard business, and overall, it's alright.Starting off with a positive note, this scanner is very small and fairly easy to set up. There are several cables, but it's nice to have them all in a neat little case. You can set it up to use it within a few minutes, but you do need to make sure to charge up the handle/battery bank. The Wifi6 on this works well to transfer data to your phone, which is mainly what I used this for. I tried the desktop app too, but the app works decently well too. I have a Samsung S23 Ultra, and it seems to have plenty of power to process the scans as they come in.Actually doing the scanning process is pretty quick, you just open the app, connect to the scanner, and start going. What you scan makes a big difference on the results, but generally it seems like this scanner wants to do things with a max size of about 20 inches and min size of about 2 inches. If you go outside of that range, you're going to have an awful time with tracking and positioning. For 3d scanning, generally you don't want to do super shiny, super flat, or super detailed objects, with this level of scanner and no tracking dots.Oddly enough, this scanner does not like tracking dots, and will not recognize them as something to help it track the scan. This seems really dumb in my opinion. Also, I couldn't really find a way to put it in turntable mode, although it has been demonstrated before.Scan quality that comes out of this is fairly good, but is nowhere near watertight. You're going to have to do some post processing work to get a usable model out of this. Not the end of the world but it's not a one-and-done situation. There also aren't very many good tools in the app to edit your mesh afterword either. The color application of the photo scan onto the 3d scan sort of works but the results are pretty choppy.Edit: Since I originally did my scans it looks like marker mode has been added, so that's good.Overall this thing CAN scan fairly well, but the tracking is really bad, its super easy to get lost, even if you're moving smoothly and slowly. It's especially bad when you're trying to get the undersided parts of an object.
