The heads on the drum are amazing. There is nothing like natural heads to enhance the sound. I'm also happy to know that the purchase is going to help so many children and families. The tone is really good. I'm not sure how they formed the beater but it feels like it was made just for my humongous hands. Knowing that this is a handmade drum by individual artisans builds a connection with the homeland of this dondo and the construction is beyond any mass-produced product.

I gave this dondo five stars even though there is a significant design issue. I use my drums for recreation and casual performing, so I don't need (nor want to spend the $$$ on) professional quality instruments. This drum is very light, hand-made, authentic looking, has a great sound, and about a four whole note range. It's easy to learn (if you already have some drumming skills) and fun to play. I chose this instrument over others in the same price range because it benefits a non-profit group - the Africa Heartwood Project. The design issue? No strap, nor a place to connect one. The dondo talking drum is typically played with a shoulder strap holding it snugly under the arm. I created a strap with fabric, rubber bands and some twist ties, and it's holding up pretty well. If anyone wants to know how I made it, post a comment and I'll upload instructions. This is a good drum and supports a good cause.
