This reads freezer temperature within a couple degrees of a mechanical thermometer I trust - so seems plenty accurate. I keep my freezer at -5 deg F. This alarms when temperature rises to +15 deg F. The alarm is loud enough to be heard in the same room but not much further. The suction cup wouldn't attach to the textured interior of my freezer - but I just let it hang down inside. The alarm only sounds for 5 seconds every minute. I'd prefer that it alarm constantly since my freezer is in the basement and someone is there only for short periods. That said I'm happy with this unit.

When used on the freezer side the alarm goes off when the freezer is in defrost cycle. It should have a way to configure how long the temperature is above the limit before alarming. The freezer appears to be operating normally. I'm surprised I didn't see this mentioned in other reviews. Works better on the refrigerator side which is where I have it now. The alarm is loud enough to hear from the garage inside the house. Also the suction cup does not stay but that is not a big deal.

It's great if your fridge or freezer are in close proximity to you, The alarm is not very loud. We have two freezers in the garage with one of these on both and they work great, but the alarm will probably not be loud enough for you to hear in the house. Which is okay for us because we have a hall that we walk down very often by the garage door and we will hear it than. If your in your garage on a daily basis that's fine also. But if you have your fridge or freezer in a detached garage or basement this might not be ideal. It's best suited for places in your main living areas of the home where you'll be able to hear it.

I have had this for 7 years now, and found it to be one of the most reliable and functional fridge/freezer temperature monitors/alarms I have tried. Don't listen to the nay sayers that complain about inaccurate/unstable temperature readings in the fridge/freezer. They should try a different thermometer to compare before blaming this one, I think that they will find it is their fridge, not the thermometer. Most cheap fridges don't do a very good job of maintaining a safe temperature, especially those found in apartments. And as far as alarm sound level, it is not like a fire alarm, but it is sufficient to hear in the next room ( mine is on the fridge in the garage, and I can hear it in the adjoining room. One thing to note, be sure to use a 1.5v alkaline, primary lithium, or rechargeable lithium battery. The alarm and display are noticeably fainter when used with a Nicad or nimh rechargeable battery because of the lower voltage.

Works well. And to those who say the alarm is not loud enough... come on, it's only a AA battery! What were you expecting? To get a loud alarm you'll need a 9V battery or bigger. Since most freezers will take a while to warm up, the alarm will be heard within 30 feet easily. (Assuming you have normal heading of course). So don't buy one if the freezer is remotely located or in a location not frequently travelled, unless you just want the temperature readout.

My fridge was cracked open the other night due to a badly placed item that kept the door from easily closing all the way. I probably had to throw away around $100 worth of food so I decided to buy this.I'm pretty happy with it so far. Operation is very simple though some may consider that a downside because they want more control. For example, you can't set the temperature at which the alarm sounds other than using a "Freezer" or "Refrigerator" switch.I decided to keep my unit entirely in the fridge so I didn't have to run an ugly wire out of the fridge and deal with potential seal issues. I have a wireless alarm for another fridge in the garage which is very nice (monitors both fridge and freezer temps) but I found that using two of them (if you have two refrigerators) can be problematic from interference. If you are interested in the more expensive wireless unit then check here: I do have to knock one star off for the volume of the alarm (which BTW only sounds once per minute - not constantly). It's not very loud. I'd say it's like the volume of a typical watch alarm so you'll need to be nearby to hear it and if the unit is in the fridge then the volume will be further reduced. I wish the alarm was louder or had a switch to control the volume level but it doesn't. Even though my alarm is inside the fridge, I can still hear it in the kitchen and main part of the house if it's quiet in the house (no TV, music, video games, etc) so I will likely hear it if there's a temp problem.See my photo of it mounted in my fridge door.

this unit is well built and fulfills it's purpose perfectly. it is easy to read and has idiot-proof markings of proper cold and frozen food storage temperatures. having worked in food service within the military, i can't overstate how important a thermometer is in your cold storage areas. how else do you know you're food is being stored correctly? you don't...unless you have thermometers. i found that the temp in my refrigerator was not where it should be...it was too warm by almost 10 degrees! after turning the setting up a notch, everything was A-OK. without a thermometer, i would never have known and would have had to rely on the recommended manufacturer settings for the refrigerator (which is a bad idea). even if your fridge has a built-in digital thermometer, you should still have a thermometer that lives in there, as all electronic devices eventually fail or give false readings.these alcohol based units are also far more accurate and reliable than the dial-type ones, which invariably fail within a short amount of time. this one is built to be pretty tough, as thermometers get dropped all the time in the industry, and perhaps even at home, depending upon where and how you decide to mount it. this is a quality NSF approved thermometer and well worth the money.
