About this item

  • Carbon steel expanded sheet provides strength, hardness, weldability, and wear resistance
  • Unpolished (mill) surface has no finish
  • Flat surface is smooth and level

The carbon steel expanded sheet has a flat, unpolished (mill) surface. Carbon steel provides strength, hardness, weldability, and resistance to wear. The flat sheet has been rolled for a smooth, level surface.

Expanded metal sheets are created by slitting and cold-forming metal as it expands in a press. This process creates diamond-shaped openings that are nominally measured the long way of the diamond (LWD) and the short way of the diamond (SWD). Raised, or standard, expanded sheets offer a skid-resistant surface and a high strength-to-weight ratio. Flat expanded sheets have been rolled for a smooth, level surface. Expanded metal sheets are measured by the percentage of open area, which is the ratio of open space to total space in a given area. A sheet with a larger percentage of open area contains less material than one with a smaller percentage.

Short review because I see this is no longer available. 10 gauge expanded carbon steel 48" x 48" for under $40 bucks and I think shipping was free. Thought it would be junk. NOT - it was better than I expected. Full 10 gauge expanded metal. Mill scale enough that it should hold off rust for awhile. Needed a 30" grate for a burner project of mine and it is perfect. Tougher than the grate on my expensive grill.

This item was very clearly described as being 48" square. The piece I received was slightly less than 48" in width...and varied in width from 47 3/8" to 47 1/2". While this minor measurement difference likely will not affect most buyers, it rendered my use to 0% as I needed a true, full 48" by 48". Buyer beware.

This was purchased to fabricate a large outdoor grill. It is a fairly heavy gauge, and appears to be sturdy enough for my application. It was a bit trickier to weld than I had anticipated, and also was not much fun to cut to size. All in all, very good quality and shipped in a practical and sturdy container, so no damage. A good value compared to trying to purchase a pre-made grill.

The metal looks OK although I would have liked a little more thickness. My only issue is with the terminology used when quoting the size of the mesh opening. There is no explanation of what LWO, LWD means - leading one to think it's the actual opening size. It is not. The measures given include the surrounding metal of each mesh opening.

Good quality and size for the price. Only two complaints:Rusts very easily, more than expected. I wouldn't use this outdoors at all, even with good paint (which is difficult to get inside the spaces with a good covering anyway). The edges are SHARP. I mean if you try moving this thing and barely nick your skin, you will cut to the fat or the bone. I slashed my leg and my arm badly enough to need stitches while moving to where I could paint it... it was so sharp I didn't even know how bad the cuts were until I was bleeding everywhere. BE CAREFUL.

I needed a sheet of expanded steel to weld into the bottom of my trailer tongue so I could throw my straps and tarps and etc there. I had a hard time finding any locally, and the steel places wanted to sell me a 4x8 sheet for $120, which was way more than I needed. I found this and shipping was pretty reasonable so I bought it. Welded into my trailer tongue (which is a 48 long x36" triangle), I can stand in the center of it and I weigh 250 lbs. I did weld a piece of 1/8" steel strap under it for support in the middle, as i know expanded steel will sag with weight and age if not supported. I plan on using whats left to make a little charcoal bbq I can slide into my hitch when I go camping.
