John Deere X520 garden tractor suddenly began losing power and lots of smoke from the exhaust. Parked it and next day found lots of gas in the crankcase. Identified this little valve as the problem and checked online with JD parts. I was surprised to find it listed at $181.54! Then I found this Carbman solenoid and ordered it. It fit perfectly and after changing the oil and filter, the X520 is running great!Hint: The solenoid includes two gaskets, JD uses the stainless steel one. Discard the other one.Hint: Snug the new solenoid in with a wrench; it doesn't have to be really tight. Check it after running a while and snug it again. Too tight on the wrench and the solenoid could break.Hint: Be sure to change the oil if there is gasoline in it otherwise you can ruin the engine. A quick sniff of the oil dipstick should let you know.Hint: Mine blew gasoline/oil out the exhaust about 4-5 feet upon starting. Put down cardboard or start it somewhere outside where it won't cause any harm.Hint: It may smoke a lot initially. Let it run a bit and the smoke should decrease.Hint: It replacing the solenoid does not work, then it could be a stuck float in the carb. If not that, then you have big/expensive problems.
