About this item

  • HIGH CARBON – Brut Aspen Mulch is 30% Carbon. Carbon under the soil takes nitrogen away from plants. Whereas using it as a top dressing is a way to get carbon into the soil without the nitrogen drain.
  • WATER RETENTION - Brut Aspen Mulch retains water and releases it slowly to the plants. Great way to stretch your watering!
  • COVER MULCH - A cover layer of Brut Aspen Mulch prevents weeds from taking root. With a pH over 8, it is a natural alternative to lime for acidic soils.
  • PROVEN SUCCESS – We spread four cups of Brut Aspen Mulch around each of the 41 Black Hill Spruce trees we planted in 2022. We watered them just once a week and all 41 survived the drought we experienced that year.
  • EASY TO USE: Gently spread onto soil as a top dressing. Perfectly suited for indoors or outdoors. Child and pet friendly.
  • BRUT WORM FARMS: A trusted provider of premium soil amendments, Brut is proud to be able to offer Aspen Mulch. It is a premium, natural product that provides real life benefits.

Used this in a bed for my honeysuckle and has helped keep weeds back and retain moisture. Looks good and easy to use as some mulches you have to wet down.

To start off, this company seems like a great small business that cares about soil health. I looked at this stuff for a few months before buying it. I’ve been trying out several different mulches around my raised beds to gauge cost+longevity+efficacy. I’m not an expert but I do have some experience with growing food in containers and raised beds are notoriously difficult when it comes to keeping them watered and fed. I also use clay water spikes with bottles and the faster the bottle drains the more water loss. I have the same soil type in all containers and my “test plots” are the same crop and location. This mulch does ok but it’s expensive which means i’m reluctant to pile it on. What’s going on under the mulch (microbial) will take some time before I can determine the benefits. Some mulches (not this one so far) attract bugs that are destructive, this one doesn’t seem to do that which is a plus. So, i’m not sold on this stuff and will need to see how my plants do over a few seasons as I add fresh compost at the end of the season and need to work it Into the soil.
