save yourself the headache and the hassle of smashing a product you just bought 3 months ago because nobody will cover how useless it has become. it literally will not print and it spends its entire time cycling through a cleaning process. I will never purchase another brother product ever again, buy another printer. This one is complete garbage.

If you buy this printer - try this first, it will not hurt anything and might save you a lot of frustration. Brought the printer, installed it and its driver per the "quick start/" instructions - it printed a "test page" so I thought it was good-to-go. I was wrong. It refused to print anything. It held all print jobs in "preview" and would go no further. Nothng I tried worked, I mean nothing. it was set as the "default printer" all old printers drivers were removed. it was hard wired to the laptop (Lenovo) and still nothing. My last option was to uninstall the printer driver and reinstall and hope that worked - glad I did not.By pure chance a friend was on the phne with her brother. She mentioned that I had a new Brother printer that was giving me issues. He said he had a brother too, loved it and told me to forget using the CD driver disc, and just plug in the printer and let the laptop discover it on its own. He had done that, and it worked perfectly, and he had a Chromebook. So I did it, and my printer works great. Its copies, prints, faxes, scans everything. So my suggestion, plug it in, turn it on, and let your computer discover it. Keep the driver CD in a drawer. As for the printer, it works great, prints very quickly, and the touchscreen is convenient. I also like it that the paper supply is not hanging outside the printer. It's not an inexpensive printer/scanner/copier/fax, but it appears to work V-well. Not able to evaluate its long-term performance as its still new. UPDATE Jan 2025 - the printer has now developed what I describe as an alignment issue (and NOT correctable by the maintenance cue). It still scans fine & faxes (which almost nobody does anymore. But when it prints at least two or more lines are unreadable - the letters jumbled as if the print head or paper was moved just as it tried to print. I've tried everything I know and no solution. So, it's a new cheap printer I can toss in 5 years after spending $$$ on ink. Never had a printer last over 5 years, none, Lexmark, Epson, HP & now Brother.

It's nice having a printer that works the way you want it to. After using a Brother L2340D laser and having no issues we needed to replace our old HP Officejet K8600TN. We have a mixed OS environment and seemed like we were having to often transfer projects to a PC to get it to print correctly on the HP 8600. It's old and a tank but we always had issues that would infuriate the most docile individual. The menus on the Brother are responsive on the touch screen color display. Setup was a breeze on all devices. The built in scan to OCR is nice and fast. The unit wakes instantly, no sluggishness at all. Was impressed they had Win10 64 bit drivers right away. This unit was just released so that makes sense I suppose. I use the Google Cloud print a good bit from my Android phone and its great. The NFC function basically just starts the Brother iPrint app or sends you to a link to download if tapped. I like the WiFi feature better though for mobile devices. Scanning to your phone is really nice for something you need quickly on the go. Also one thing I noticed that I don't see often on Inkjet printers is when canceling a print job the Brother J880DW cancels it immediately without fuss. I'm use to HPs and others grinding for 2 minutes or even having to unplug power to get them reset. The only thing some people may have trouble with is the 4x6 photo paper tray. You have to slide it back when you want to print on this size manually and then back for 8.5x11. It's kinda cool you can keep it loaded with this size paper ready to go though. This printer seems to do photos way better than I thought it would for the price. The 880 and 885 are the same except the 880 has a fax built in. If you do not need a fax then the 885 may be for you. I purchased this unit before it was apparently released or in stock at Amazon because it was a replacement for the renowned 870.Pros: Easy setup, supports everything you would want and for the price does better than expected picture quality. Drivers seem equally featured on all operating systems. Compact. Lots of scan to functions from the touch screen. Cheaper priced ink cartridges than some others. People like my dad would appreciate the full printed manual included with the printer to hold in hand as he watches TV and "studies up". Most are on PDFs on the disk included.Cons:Being very critical, as there is not much not to like about this model.Possible confusion on the 4x6 push back tray for some that don't read instructions. Small paper tray. Print cartridges look small. I just received the 880 and time will tell how long they last and if the cheaper price to yeild ratio compared to larger cartridges of other models.

I've only used this printer for a week, and in a wired configuration (Ethernet). My reason for purchasing is that it's compact and Brother has a reputation for low print costs. Other models I was considering have an output tray that takes up extra room that i didn't want to waste. The print/scan quality & print speed is acceptable.I'm used to Canon models recently, and the Brother seemed less refined. Canon has very clear instructions, and this Brother model does not. It wasn't clear at all on how to make the Ethernet or USB connections. You have to open up the printer, as if to access the print head, and thread the cable inside the thing (use the tabs on the side of the printer and pull up). Why can't they put the port outside the printer as virtually everyone else? Also, the hinges on the scanner bed's lid seemed rickety. I guess we have to be careful with it, but we will most likely use the document feeder on top. In general, the build quality is not refined. I'm fairly certain Steve Jobs had no hand in designing this.Next, the ink tanks sit near the outside of the printer - not on the print head. I guess this might help with print head reliability with users not mucking with it, and it's more convenient to change the ink cartridges. But it seems to require the ink to travel much further to get to the print head. Besides the waste of ink, I'm wondering if there is the risk of the ink drying up inside the path to the print head, and clogging things up? Again, Canon has the ink cartridges sitting right on the print head, so these concerns are not there. As of now, I have no data that this is going to be a problem, so I am rating it per its current condition. One star off for sub-par instructions, inconvenient wired connections and build quality.
