This gauge makes it easy to get an idea of how work. Your brake pads are. If it’s 4mm or less I would say get ready to replace brakes. But if it’s 5mm or more you can have a clue you should be good for a bit more miles.

This is an easy to use device to measure your remaining brake pad. You can do it with the wheel on if you have access to an edge of the pad. There are limited to no directions which i think would be helpful. It works on an assumption of a given thickness of the brake backer plate (2mm if i recall). I'd give it 5

Product Reviewed: Brake Pad Measuring Tool, Brake Pad Thickness Gauge for $8 less 5% couponTL;DR; Quirky tool; No instructions; Markings are off?; Worth the money for sure.Like other reviewers I’m confused by the markings on the tool. Maybe there is some assumption about the thickness of the steel backing pad or maybe it’s user error on my part. It doesn’t matter though. There are a couple of ways to use this tool regardless of the markings/calibration. The little foot can hook under the backing when it overhangs the pad and you can directly mark thickeness from the top of the foot to the end of the extended pin. OR You can place the foot on top of the backing and measure the total pad/backing thickness – and deduce then the remaining pad thickness from that. It’s easy enough to put calipers up against this thing and read directly. Some instructions would be nice. Maybe there is a way to calibrate it but I could find no locking mechanism or screw adjustment to do so. I did try this with a motorcycle disk brake but could not access the needed area. More for cars I think.4 stars – confusing but good. Saves a bunch of time if you need it.How I review:Reviews start with 5 stars and I subtract points.- 0 for value but I try to provide guidance-0.5 to -3 for product not matching description e.g. stainless steel is actually plated steel-0.5 to -3 for product missing badly on executionI select products carefully so low (1-3 scores) are rare but detailed comments and critiques almost always are in the review. Most of my reviews come out 4-5 range. If possible I dismantle or destroy items to examine inner workings.

For some reason the gauge is meant to be used from the outside of the brakes only. This is an issues because not all brake pad backing plates are the same thickness . There isn’t a way to zero the gauge either. It’s a good idea but someone needs to produce a mark 2 version

This is the sort of tool that people don't really salivate over. But it is certainly the type of thing that when others see you with it, they instantly see the need for it and at least two of my friends expressed similar sentiments. It's a must-have for the DIY mechanic. For those of you who identify as such, you can relate to having to remove the wheels or even the pads themselves in order to properly tell if the pads are prematurely wearing or wearing unevenly. All you have to do is have a clear view of the caliper and the rotor and be able to place this tool between the spokes of the rim, and voila! You can accurately tell what the pad height is. This is really an ingenious little number and it's so simple and easy to use that there is really little excuse in not checking you pads before you go on that long drive with the family, or before you take the wheel of that rental from that low-budget rental agency that is the only one with an available car when you get to that popular holiday destination. You get the idea.
