I installed this on my 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis. It installed without any problems, I took my time and did it right, pretty much a full day. But that did include the installation of a tranny cooler too.I did need to use a bottle jack to compress the 1-2 piston if memory serves my right? otherwise it's the 2-3 piston? instead of buying a $60+ tool made for that job. There's two heavy springs behind that piston and the new ones with the kit are even stronger. I'd say there's no way it can be compressed by hand to remove the snap ring. The Heavy Duty / Towing setting is how I set mine. They included a full scale drilling template for the separator plate as well as the drill bits needed. This made it easy to know which holes get opened up and by how much. The shift points are delayed, and much firmer. First to second shift is a bit harsh, but better than the factory granny shifts in my opinion. It also seems to downshift sooner and quickly when stomping on the gas pedal. I'm very happy with the end results.Additional Tools and Parts Required for the job.A bottle jack and a few 4x4 blocks of wood to compress that piston mentioned above. Or buy the special tool? The directions will have it's part number, but it's not available on Amazon.Decent pair of snap ring pliers for that piston retaining ring. The pliers need to pinch the snap ring closed to remove and reinstall. The snap ring is rather stout.I did buy this $25 torque wrench from Amazon for this job.EPAuto 1/4-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench (20-200 in.-lb. / 2.26 ~ 22.6 Nm)Used it for the valve body and pan bolts. Also needed some petroleum jelly to keep the check balls and gaskets in place. With the new cooler it required 11+ quarts of Mercon V to fill the tranny. Just doing the shift improver kit would probably require less oil?My re-usable pan gasket was able to be reused.A new tranny oil filter must be purchased. You need to have a drill, the drill bits are included in the kit. There are 4 drill bits in the kit.Of course sockets, ratchet, and other common tools.Other parts not needed but I purchased for this job:Dorman pan with drain plug from Amazon. If you buy this move the factory magnet from the old pan to this one. The magnet is attached to the steel pan just by it's magnetic force. The magnet is nasty consider a pair of disposable gloves to do this.Needa magnetic M14-1.50 drain plug bolt for the pan from Amazon.Hayden 678 rapid cool Transmission cooler from Amazon.Another 5 feet of 3/8 LDR Industries fuel line from Amazon.A couple cans of brake cleaner will help too.Lots of rags this is a messy job.
