screw is hard to turn but turning the screws before use loosens them upvery sturdy used them to support garage roof.

I ordered these for a foundation repair project I'm doing, I was going to get the Ellis ones but they're twice the cost and still are just manufactured in china, so I went with these since they're cheaper. When they came I put some Vaseline on the threads and completely unscrewed them so they would be easy to turn. The section of sill plate I'm holding with these is 9' above the dirt, I'm using 2 2x4s with 3/4 scrap ply in between which is way cheaper than buying 4x4 posts.

Right out of the box, 4 out of 8 jacks would not thread out. A 24 inch pipe wrench with a 3ft bar had trouble turning them out with zero load. These jacks are crap.

I had a pole barn with a rotting pole that I needed to fix, and these helped quite a bit. I got some 4x4x10' and used it to support the barn while I dug the old pole out, poured a footing and replaced it.These things worked, but there are 2 important things to understand:1. These are not jacks. You cannot lift with them. You brace with them. I had a loader on a tractor and a chain, which I lifted the bad post with and then put these braces in. Had I not used a loader, I would have had to use a car jack or something to lift the barn, then put these braces in.I'll say it one more time - you cannot lift with these things - you jack up what you want to brace (with something else) then put these under it and raise them until snug and then remove the jack.2. As with many things in life, if you lube them they will be a lot easier to screw. If you don't lube them, screwing them will be an exercise in frustration, causing the shafts that you use to screw them to bend and making it almost impossible to put where you want them.I would strongly recommend getting some axle/bearing grease when you get these. Then, remove the base plate and screw completely from the 4x4 receiver. I put on a rubber glove and put axle grease along the shaft and threads of the screw and then screwed the screw in. Wipe off the excess, and these things will last forever. If you don't do this, they will not screw properly and the bars will warp, threads will grind and strip and they won't last long at all.

I applied WD-40 to screw beforehand, shimmed a 10 ft 3.5x3.5 post into the 4x4 jack well. No issues whatsoever. My deck/screened porch is 12 ft deep and about 30 ft long. Lifted just enough to get the old post swinging freely.

Bought 4 of these to do an emergency repair to a support beam under my house, new out of box the threaded shaft was difficult to screw in an out, felt like the screw pitch and the hub thread pitch were slightly off, had to run them in and out several times and clean the threads off each time with a wire brush and then put a moly grease on the threads, if it was not an emergency i would of sent them back, looked nice and well made but a real pain to use under the house when you are trying to hold everything in place and struggle turning the jack shaft to raise it.

So, yes, drawbacks and advantages... Pro, the bar compared to the welded-in bar on the Akron, is better. Pro, the threaded portion I think is longer. Pro, the threads are not painted like they are on the Akron! Con, the pocket for the 4x4 is way way too big - it is going to necessitate a shim, maybe a 1/4" bit of plywood nailed onto two sides. Just trusting the nail holes is _not_ good enough for these kinds of applications - basically the 4x4 is going to have to be expanded on the end from 3.5" to about 3.8" or so... Now, the _Akron_ product has it's own hassle, they paint the threads on those, so you have to force it with wd40 in a vise for 10 minutes before it is usable. Sigh. Not sure which is worse - having to force the paint off the threads on the other one, or having to shim this one by jamming in some thin plywood. I'm giving them both three stars, probably should both be 2 stars. Both of these problems are ridiculous - all 4x4s are basically the same size, why would this be so wobbly-large? And, why paint the threads on the other product? The other one is better once you fix it by working the threads in a vise, but this one is probably less effort to get into use. Plus, I think it has more thread-adjustment-range...
