I bought this exact model by this same brand 18 years ago and that's how long it lasted before it finally became too dilapidated to use. Back then it was made of true wood. So I was a little horrified at first to see it's made of a composite recycled "lumber" which is a blend of recycled plastics. The description does state this, but for some reason I missed it. Once I got it set up though, I got over it. Coincidentally, a few weeks later I had a new deck added to my house and the guy sold me on the benefits of composite: no rotting, weatherproof, no splinters or splitting, no mildew buildup, etc. It was only then that I fully appreciated the composite material of this feeder, so now I'm glad for it because I'll easily get another 20 years from this feeder and it may even outlive me, ha ha.I use this feeder daily as a primary feeder, although I do also hang a suet above it so it catches the crumbs. There's a lot of birds who prefer platform feeders like Mourning Doves, but even little birds like to gather on it. As I type this review there's a group of Goldfinch hanging out and happily eating. It's also handy for setting a dish of jelly out for Orioles, no special feeder required. The two screens are metal, just like my original one, and you can remove them easily to clean them off and replace. It's one of those things that you cringe a little at the price initially, but it's completely worth it. You do need a pole setup and mount, so order a mount separately if you need one. In my case my mount is rusted to the pole permanently (because again, it's 18 years old!) but I was able to just set this feeder down over it and it sits perfectly where the old one did. It's a great feeder and platform feeders really add to the variety of birds that visit.

I had this same seed catcher made of cedar, but after a few years it was looking pretty shabby despite my efforts to maintain the wood. I have it installed on a pole underneath a seed feeder. It really helps catch the seed and hulls that fall. Also many more birds can eat at the feeder because many eat from the tray itself. I does a great job preventing waste of seed and preventing the mess on the ground under the feeder. Really like the material that it is made of. It is sturdy and I think it will last a long time without looking old. I hesitated because of the cost, but now don't regret getting it.

It's a great idea and besides the trays, it's PVC or somethign and should last quite some time. The trays are rusty after the first year, and they don't really sit flat in the structure depending on the temperature (steel and plastic expand differently). But it's not a really big deal.It worked really well for me on a pole with a squirrel cone below and a typical cylinder type feeder above - with it catching all the stuff blue jays pull out of the feeder, instead of letting it fall to the ground. My squirrel peanut gallery of 6-10 squirrels at all times disappeared. The reason I can't use it is that I use those cones that work great for squirrels and raccoons. But with this above it it sticks out far enough that a big raccoon can reach around and use it to pull up past the cone. So I look out and it's basically a perch for a raccoon to sit at the buffet eating right out of the feeder.I have 6' poles. I could use 10' poles or something, but then it's a hassle to add the seed - and the racoon is probably shimmying up anyway (not jumping) and it might not matter.I'd get it again if I didn't have the raccoon issue though - even though seems over priced for what it is -

I have my birdfeeder suspended at the edge of our deck. Without this seed catcher tray, I had mounds of scattered birdseed and seed shells all over the nearby steps off the deck, on the patio below, and all over the deck. I was vacuuming, sweeping and wiping two or three times a week. I used a deck umbrella mount and some galvanized pipe and fittings from a local recycling store (spray painted black) to mount this under the feeder, and it has made a HUGE difference. It's not perfect -- I still have to tidy up occasionally-- but everything stays so much cleaner now. And, the birds love getting the seeds that have dropped down into the tray. We have even gotten some different types of birds eating from the tray that don't eat from the feeder. Cleaning the trays isn't perfect; it would be nice if there was a bit more of an edge around the sides of the tray, but overall, I LOVE this thing. I got the recycled plastic one, and I am very pleased with the quality. Looks good and works well.

I have another of these trays purchased from Wild Birds Unlimited from years past and wanted another. All my feeders are made from recycled plastic and I love the durability and making only one purchase. This tray does the job, but doesn't quite measure up to my first tray. I had to purchase a flange, which I screwed onto the bottom. Then purchased a 12 inch piece of pipe, which screwed into the flange. I put a pipe into the ground, then the tray with extended pipe slid into the ground pipe. The tray is easy to clean, but they don't fit snugly like the other tray. I have had some very windy days and occasionally one tray gets dislodged. I am happy with this tray overall, and it allows me to hang at least four other types of feeders from each of the corners. The tray is not ready to go and having some knowledge about making it work for you is helpful.
