I bought this for my husband for a gift hoping he will get into his shop and build something. The plans look easy enough.

Very neat bird house building book, plus more ideas for feeders too. This book shows what bird for what birdhouse to make it for, very neat concept for anyone who loves to build and take care of birds. Great presents too. This book is easy to read and understand. My husband loves it.

I feel bad panning this book because I got the impression that the people who put this together are passionate about what they did.But ... to be honest ... I was unimpressed with the lack of practical, accurate designs, not to mention the materials being used. For me, most of the houses weren't something I'd want to make and put my name on. I'm not interested in building a birdhouse that looks like a human house. I want something that will attract a bird and serve its nesting needs. I want something that is practical. That can be easily cleaned. That's got an opening that's properly placed and sized. The book does have a chart on hole requirements, but it seems like a throw-in and you can easily find that online anyway. As for materials, there's just no way you're going to convince me to use plywood - of any type - for a birdhouse. Nor will I be painting it.I built two of the "american robin nesting shelf" because I thought was a great looking, practical solution. Surely, they came out great, but so far I've had no action on either one, despite the countless robins in the yard. Frankly, they seem too small for robins. While all my other designs are now occupied this spring, these have seen no action yet. Time will tell. The one house that I really liked from the book was the bat house from Megan Fitzpatrick. I built that and installed it on the barn. No action yet, but again ... time will tell. I really enjoyed making that house.I do want to build the butterfly house. That looks pretty cool to me. And I would actually paint that one.Otherwise, I could honestly pull most of the designs out of the book and be left with 1/10 of the material that I'd find useful.

I bought this book as a birthday gift, for my son who was turning 11. Regardless how practical/non-practical these birdhouses are, it has been a great bonding tool between father and son. We are a very busy family like most, but if you would like an avenue for creativity and gifts they can give away, I would highly recommend this book.

Lots of good information for people just getting started... not just drawings and dimensions. Plans for each project are very complete with a detailed cutting list, dimensional drawings, helpful notes and tips. There are quite a few basic projects, but many more "creative" versions. For anyone looking for a bunch of basic designs, this is more than that. For anyone looking for creative ideas for alternative designs, there are quite a few in here, including feeders, etc.

Out of all the how to build a bird house books I've discovered on Amazon this is by far my favourite. Not only does it provide a full colour photo instructions and step by step guides, the bird houses are made from various woods including baltic birch plywood and pine, so you have an idea how the wood cuts and how the final product looks. It is an American published book targeted towards their audience but it doesn't put you off with the incredible bird house designs it offers. The trick is to use there designs and tweak a few things to make it your own design targeted towards British birds including Tree Sparrows and Blue Tits.
