I like to scale our perch but they are narrow fish with small scales. Tried spoons, other traditional "teethy" scalers but tend to rip the fish and wrench them out of your gloved hand. This tool literally scrubs the scales off. They do not fly all over and they do not gouge the fish. If you want to scale your fish - use this!

We usually use tablespoons to scale our bream but found this scaler at a box store. Pleasantly surprised how well it worked so we had to order more! Great tool and price was good too. Highly recommend if scaling fish!

Allows you to process the fish in a timely manner so that you can grill the fish hole and not lose any of the savory meat.

It really works. I use it to scale med to large fish. Very easy to use. Fish skin remains totally intact. Very fast to use. Better than what I expected!

I bought this just to give it a try because of the reviews and I was frankly just tired of scales flying everywhere and feeling like I was going to cut my fingers using a knife around the edge of the fish. Of course, once I got it my local market started selling fish that was pre-scaled. I finally got a nice piece of salmon to try it on and this really worked great and made it very easy and safe. I really had no expectations but was so taken back by how easy and useful it is that I thought I should give it some positive feedback.I love crispy skin salmon (aka, salmon bacon) and this just made it SO much easier to make. It's all plastic so not sure how long it will last but it sure beats using a serrated knife like I've been doing for years. I'd but it again or give as a gift.

Wife loves this thing. We eat a lot of fish. Used to be that when she scaled them we had fish scales all over the kitchen counter. This keeps the flying scales to almost nothing making cleanup a breeze. The only thing I would change is the plastic it's made of, seems like the brittle type that will crack or break if dropped. Time will tell. Would get 5 stars if made with an unbreakable type material.

My dad retired a couple years back, which means he's gotten a lot more fishing time in. Problem is, he fills up his freezer full of bass faster than he can be bothered to clean them. I ran into the magic fish scaler while looking for a filet board, and had my doubts from looking at the thing, but figured I'd take the plunge due to all the good reviews. After my dad saw the thing, he figured I'd been sold some snake oil as well. No way this rattling plastic toy could be better than a good ol' knife. Fast forward to today, when he decided it was finally time to clear out some freezer spacer and called me over to lighten the workload. We each donned our dish gloves and grabbed a bass, him with his knife and me with the magic scaler. Both of us were floored when I cleaned a whole side bare in the time it took him to make it an inch up the tail. It took 1 bass for him to ask when I was ordering another.I honestly have no idea how this thing works; it just does. Big scales, the small annoying scales, the tough-to-get scales near the fins - Norm's magic creation brushes them all off with ease. A quick rinse under some running water cleans the thing up, and while it doesn't catch every scale, it does keep them good and contained to the workspace; if I was using a knife, I'd be picking scales out of my hair. And the speed is just incredible. We had 8 15+ inch baddies naked as could be before the flies even had time to catch on to what we were doing. If you think you'll ever scale a fish in your lifetime, just buy this thing. Works like a charm, American made, and it's like 10 bucks. 5 stars. If Big Norm ever makes a magic gutting tool, my dad might just be at the lake every day.

Update (Sept. 19, 2015). I lent my scaler to my mom, who goes on fishing trips all the time. She LOVED it and had me order five more. She plans to keep one for herself and give the others as Christmas gifts, lol!I was a bit skeptical about this fish scaler: It looks weird, and the "teeth" seem too big and spaced out. But using a knife to scale fish wasn't cutting it for me anymore--it took forever and I'd get scales all over my studio-size kitchen. I looked at a lot of different scalers on Amazon and was sold on this one after reading a reviewer's comment about scales not flying all over the place when using it. I bought the scaler, had it for a month so before using it, and was completely wowed when I did.
