I purchased two of these bits, and the Rockler jig and I was pretty excited. The jig seems good. I just tested it out, now, on some scarp birch plywood and had to come in and type this review. First time, the drill bit fell out of the I don't know spring loaded thing, the bit was not in it tight enough, so me the novice I got an allen key to tighten the allen nut which holds the screw into the bit, and the entire drill bit sprung apart into a jumbled mess - let me tell you it's impossible to put together again. Frustrated with trying to put that together, I used the other second Bull horn bit I bought (it ought to be called bull horn, and not big horn). That bit was used on the test piece shown in the photo, and that wood had one coat of polyurethane 3x on it. The drill bit violently chews through the wood, tearing it to shreds. No clean hole, this is not even sandable to make it look good. No way this is furniture grade, or looks good. A beaver could make a better hole than that. Do not buy this bit. I'm pissed. I'm out a good piece of scrap wood now, and a couple $14 junk bits that will be sent back. Please note, I am a verified purchaser of this item.

Works very well. Chips melamine though, but that's to be expected.

I ordered this to make the holes for shelf supports in a bookcase. I thought it would be an improvement over taping a drill bit to indicate the correct depth. I think the product is a good idea and I like that the drill bit has a point on it, making it much easier to be accurate with the hole. The drawback, at least with the one I received, was that the assembly did not spin true even though I tried a number of times. When I drilled a few test holes I found that they were enlarged because of the wobble in the assembly. I like the way the assembly is designed with a spring and the correct depth for a 5mm shelf peg. It was unfortunate that the tool had a wobble otherwise it would have been perfect.

Works great. Plugs up with sawdust sometimes, easy to clean out. Drills a nice clean hole.

Works great with the Big Horn 19651 drilling jig. Might be over kill if you are just doing one shelving unit.

The first Big Horn Bit that I received drilled holes that were way too large due to a drill bit that was not straight.Amazon had me send the defective one back and replaced it with another that worked just fine.BEFORE YOU USE THIS BIT...PLEASE READ BELOW!!!!Not sure the negative reviews on this item are actually the fault of the Big Horn Bit.--You absolutely must lubricate the internal workings of this bit (and the drill) with a dry lubricant like Boeshield T9. If you dont, the bit will not operate smoothly and will clog more often.--Also, to avoid tear-out of the wood, put a strip of tape over the area you plan to drill the holes, then drill through the tape.--In addition, before you use this product, tighten the Allen head screw that holds the drill and shaft together, otherwise it may "explode" as one user put it. It is spring loaded and can fly apart if the screw loosens up. You only need to loosen it enough to remove the drill bit. Any more and you will release the spring loaded mechanism.I do like the Insty-Bit better, it appears to be higher quality, but for small jobs, this should do just fine.

Although it does not say it in the description, this is a brad point bit and is high quality. I've just got it into the shop last week and used it on a small project with birch veneer. No tearout at all and the holes were centered well with the jig I was using. The spring tension is a bit high but I'd rather have a strong spring to clear the chips out of the holes and reseat the bit. I'd purchase again.
