Smaller than I expected

The loupe does exactly what it says it will do, which is to magnify small objects with a distortion-free flat field of view. It is a bit smaller than average though. Curiously the lens was set into black plastic frame rather than brass, which seemed to be a rather cheap material for such an expensive lens, but this makes it very lightweight compared to the solid metal ones I've had in the past.

This is a loupe intended for inspecting tiny objects like gemstones. It's about as tiny as a gemstone as well. It's not a magnifying glass to give to a kid. It requires some practice to use and definitely strains your eyes.Construction is a bit crude and cheap, but the price isn't high either. The body is somewhat crudely molded black plastic and the metal cover is stamped steel, but optically I think it's fine.

Bottom line: if you just need a magnifier, get a cheap one at a pharmacy. If you need a "jeweler's loupe" with good optics, pay for something with good value. There are plenty of other companies that make good loupe magnifiers. I purchased this to replace my aging (27 yr old) B&L Coddington for examining minute plant parts (I am a botanist). The optics are good, if of small diameter. However good the glass, the lens casing is of cheap plastic; in places it's misshapen, scratched, & marred, and the plastic has the tell-tale discoloration of cheap plastic left in the sun or exposed to heat or pressure. On top of that, the optics are clumsily glued into the plastic. I'm returning mine because I can't trust it to last.

I lost my expensive Edmund Scientific Triplet. It had a fancy brass case and I used it for identifying plants and the pests that attack them. Needing a quick replacement, I looked online and found this B&L Triplet for much less. It was risk-free purchasing from Amazon; I took the plunge. This is a very nice functional Triplet for the price! The optics are very good; the mount for the lens is metal -- not plastic as some described, and the rivet holding the lens mount and its case is secure. I can traipse in the field and -- if I should lose this Triplet -- will stop the relentless search for it and just buy another one of these. Maybe I should buy another one now as a spare...

I think many of the reviewers complaining about this magnifier are not familiar with the inherent limitations of a 10X magnifier - namely that the field of vision is small, and you have to get very close with it. This lens produces a very clear image, with very little distortion around the edges and virtually no chromatic effects at the edges. I've used various magnifying glasses in my work over the years and this is the best for fine detail. I still use others with a wider field of vision for work not needing the highest magnification, but this is the best for fine detail. If it were available in a larger diameter lens, I'd buy that one too. (the viewing area of this lens is 14 mm, or 9/16".)

This B&L 10x magnifier is amazing! It will view trichomes well enough to know when to harvest, especially laid flat against the back of your phone, with the camera lined up to the lens. The lens quality is insanely clear, edge to edge. I have done my research, and not many are better than this, or really worth the step up in cost. A little pricey, but it matters if you care about quality and truth. Now, to the cheapos. They claim 30x, 40x, 20x, triplet, etc., for such a low price.....at ridiculous magnifications! Sounds to good to be true right? Well, it is. The laws of nature dictate such things and cannot be claimed just because its printed on the top. Real people have compared (in Amazon Reviews) these "High Mag" loupes side by side to legitimate loupes (like this B&L 10x Hastings Triplet) and found that they were the same magnification or slightly higher.....but with pretty lousy and inconsistent optics.....especially in comparison to this one. "Oh but it comes with a light!" Just more junk to break; all held cheaply as possible in a cheap frame with cheap optics. Garbage and Lies. DO NOT SUPPORT ANY OF IT.If you want a legitimate and truly specified 10x Loupe, THIS IS THE ONE. I just got it today and already know that I have a quality tool in hand. I couldn't bring myself to settle at the alluring low price of the NO NAME BRAND, knowing that the product is a complete lie AND is poorly made to boot. Don't waste your time looking anywhere else. Also, I am so stoked about this 10x and how easy it was to use with my phone, I instantly bought the 20x version a moment ago. It is on its way! I'm broke now, but I can now see anything, to the most practical level of handheld optics. I am certain that it will easily line up to my phone like the 10x. Both will likely last forever......granted they don't get lost. Put them on a lanyard shortly upon receipt!

Looks smaller than most magnifying glass on the market. Magnification is clear and good enough for most application

I just received my B&L hand lens today. It seems to be nice quality. I have tried it out on a few rocks I have laying around the house. Focus is effortless. The size is very small. Smaller than I expected. As a geology student I will find a use for it, but I doubt this will be my "go to" hand lens when I am out in the field. I will probably use Belomo for that (diameter is bigger and quality is still good). Since size is a question a lot of people have I have included two photographs to scale the B&L hand lens.

Good quality optics and materials. The method used to adhere the lens to the plastic frame could be improved. I noticed a thin tab of plastic on the rim of the lens which was partially obstructing the view. I proceeded to pull it off, and it actually came off all the way around the lens. It turns out that is what was holding the lens in place, not glue. I put some Duco cement on the lens, slid it back into the frame, and all was well.

Bought this for my mineralogy lab and field geology class, It seems solid to me and is much clearer with a larger usable field of view than the cheap off-brands that some other students got, some of which cost less than their shipping. Those cheap made in china lenses work for the purposes of the class but they are of noticeably lower quality and don't seem to be 10x magnification even though they are marked as such. If you are a serious geology student / enthusiast and plan on a career in the geoscience field then this is one of the two the hand lens brands to invest in. If you like quality, a B&L or Belomo lens and an Estwing rock pick are a must, otherwise chinese crap can get you through your BS degree program but don't expect it to last though a post-grad field study without regretting cheaping out on essential tools.
