The product description says they are stainable but I had some concerns so I posted the question about how they would accept a dark stain like walnut. Unfortunately, I did not get a reply so I took a chance and ordered them. I did some quick experimenting on the bottoms with gel and penetrating stains both with and without conditioner and the results were dramatic. The only way I could find to get the wood to accept a generally uniform stain was to use a conditioner and then a gel stain. I used General Finishes Brown Mahogany. These bases are constructed of several different pieces of wood and all wood accepts stain differently so I expected some variations. Overall, I am satisfied with the results. In the picture they have one coat of stain and no finish. I hope this helps.
