Make sure to rinse well! Perfect for the AquaClear HOB filters! I usually change or add one of these when you start to smell the sponge.

These are easy to put in and pull out of your filter due to the size of them. The mesh package is good quality too, and they work as expected.

With the Aquaclear filter/pump you have to switch out carbon filters every month, the sponge part every 2 months and biomaterial every three months. Never replace all your filters at the same time because you don't want to lose those bacteria you grew when you cycled your tank. I removed the entire filter/pump assembly and just held it over the aquarium to let the water drain out of it. Then I pulled out the biofilter which was on top then the charcoal filter and replaced the charcoal filter with the new one - the old one still looked in great shape still but the sponge sure needs replacement- it is solid black, I may not be able to wait much longer on changing that. Changing filters, instead of just rinsing them off is quite the money maker for the company (although supposedly the charcoal gets used up - I didn't really notice any missing. Also remember to remove your charcoal filter if you have to administer any medication to the entire tank or the charcoal filter will filter you medication out of the water. Put filter/pump back in the water and then, just like when you first got the filter, you need to prime the pump by pouring a few cups of water in it - I don't know exactly how much but the filter will come to life once you've put enough priming water in it.
