Ampersand Art Supply's Museum Series Gessobord is a truly archival surface for oil and acrylic painting. Gessobord is made from our premium warp-resistant 1/8" profile FSC-Certified Hardbord that is sealed and protected with our proprietary Archiva-Seal to prevent yellowing from Support Induced Discoloration (SID). Each panel is individually coated with a professional artists’ grade acid-free acrylic gesso for a slight, even texture. Artists choose wood painting panels because the surface offers more vibrant colors, allows for precise detail and is an overall better support than canvas for their artwork. Ampersand panels are strong enough to hold up to the most rigorous palette knife painting and heavy layers of collage and will not bow or flex like canvas. Only Ampersand builds cradles by hand with premium-grade, 13-ply birch plywood for maximum stability and a clean, finished look from edge to edge. Choose from 3/4", 1 1/2" and 2" deep cradles, offering support and presentation all-in-one. Gessobord is perfect for oil, acrylic, palette knife painting, plein air, fine brushwork, mixed media, and is also a great surface for mounting papers, photos, giclee's and canvas! All Ampersand Museum Series Gessobord panels are eco-friendly, formaldehyde-free, and proudly handcrafted in the USA.

This is a perfect size surface to paint on and I like the thickness. I extend my painting onto the sides and it looks attractive and even impressive. I didn’t even have to apply gesso before painting which made the process easier and more fun. The price was right as well.

I have always like the Ampersand boards for how smooth they are, allowing for extra details in painting. This product lives up to my expectations as always.

When I order these gessoed panels I usually cut them on a table saw to the proportions I desire. Also I like a bit more texture on the panels and apply about three more coats of gesso in different directions for a suitable texture. Also, I put a couple of coats of gesso on the back to keep the panel from warping. I would like to know what the base of the panels is made from.... is it a type of Masonite ?

These panels are ideal for detailed paintings in oil paint and oil pastels. The surface is smooth and has just enough tooth for oil paint to glide on. The hardboard backing is tough and durable. The colors come out vibrant I get a perfect finished look with these boards. These can easily handle palette knife paintings with lots of thick paint. I prefer these boards to canvases and they are easy to frame.

I bought this for an art project after it was recommended by another artist. The surface is gessoed and is very smooth and nice - it does not have the textured feel like a canvas panel. It's ready for your paint or other media. It's very high quality and I will be buying more. I recommend it for anyone who wants a quality art "canvas."

They are smaller than I thought. Although, I’m sure they’re of great quality, but there are almost zero local retailers here in Germany, who offer Ampersand Gesso boards. The cost rises so high with all the shipping costs from Amazon or any other online shop. I wish Ampersand would find a way to offer its products directly to the customers in Germany without shipping costs. It’s expensive enough already. But it’s truly a nice product.

I love these boards to do my acrylic paintings on. They are sturdy, nicely primed and the paint just glides on.

The top corner is damaged. I’m still going to paint on it as it’s just for practice but I would be so disappointed if I bought this for a commission. I’m sure not all of them come damaged but considering the money I spent on it.... disheartening.

This is a good masonite board covered with gesso applied very smoothly. Good quality thick boards are glued to all four sides to the back making a very smooth edge for strenghth and long life. I like to add a layer of my own gesso to the smooth surface to give a little "tooth" for painting in oil or acrylic or watercolor. I use a wide bristle brush to apply this layer of gesso first vertically and then horizontally.
