About this item

  • Bare, 7 Strand copper wire construction
  • 13% Greater Density than 1x7 Stainless Steel Trolling Wire
  • Increased strike rates when trolling in fresh water
  • Positive ions in copper help attract fish
  • Sinks faster than steel, allowing for a greater trolling depth with less line

Surfstrand Copper Trolling wire is bare, 1x7 stranded copper wire that has 13% greater density than stainless steel. This line sinks more rapidly than stainless steel, and allows you to troll deeper with less line in the water. The 1x7 strand construction gives this line good flexibility and kink resistance. Many anglers report increased strike rates with the use of copper terminal tackle - believing that the positive ions in copper help to attract fish.

Better depths with this thinner 7 strand copper wire. Also needs less volume on your reels

I have used nylon coated wire and had problems with corrosion when the nylon coat is punctured. I think the corrosion is caused because the salt that is under the nylon coat cannot be rinsed off. Eventually the wire breaks at the corrosion, I think because the corrosion is due to chloride stress. The bare wire can be rinsed clean of the salt and so far I haven't had corrosion or wire breakage.

using this wire as an amateur radio antenna, works well for me, i catch contacts, not fish with it....

I bought this for a long wire HF antenna. It seems strong and is thin enough that it isn't very visible. I ran about 100 foot up about 30 foot high in a tree and have great reception.

I have used this line once and liked it. It sinks fast and deep with less line drag than lead core line. I caught two fish in the first five minutes trolling a large spoon. The line really connects you to the fish, no stretch at all. There is a learning curve to prevent kinks and coils as the line has significant memory. I suggest using a high flex rod with a small pulley rod tip to help prevent coiling issues. I also colour coded the line at 25 foot intervals with spray paint so I can check my length and depth. I only gave four stars because of the coiling issues and no form of colour coding for length. I would recommend this line.

Multi strand wire is the best to use when fishing for fish with teeth such as kingfish. Multi strand is easy to tie with the figure eight knot and resist breaking due to multiple strands. AFW wire is great and highly recommend

As an amateur (ham) radio operator, I enjoy building my own antennas. This stuff is excellent for building antennas that can be quickly deployed in emergency situations, or for quick, portable setups - like in a park. I even put up a horizontal loop antenna with this wire and it's working great on 40m through 10m. It's flexible enough to be wound on a spool or reel for quick deployment. Just be careful on winding so it doesn't tangle. It may stretch over time since it's a somewhat soft copper, but since I intend to use it for portable antennas, that won't be a problem. Highly recommend.

Lets start this by saying that I found the right crimp connectors for the 45lb version of this line. I also used these wire thimbles as strain relief on the crimped in loops. I ordered this line to make lightweight, nearly invisible HAM Radio HF (High Frequency) antennas. While it is challenging to work with, it does indeed do the job at a reasonable price. (I ordered the 600ft, 45lb version)Pros:- Reasonable price compared to other antenna-specific wire- Thin and nearly invisible- Light weight for those who want a portable pack antenna for field use- Strong enough to hold up a reasonable length of RG-8x feed cable and a light center connector/balun for up to a 20m free hanging antenna. I think it will work for a 40m antenna too, but I have not been able to test it properly.- Perfect stealth wire for most HF applications if you can support the center- You have the joy of improvising- You can brag that you've made contacts using fishing line as an antenna. :-)Cons:- It will kink up badly if you don't pay attention to coils and tension- Likes to coil up when you release tension- Not sure if it is strong enough to make a free hanging dipole for anything over 20m.I originally bought this to reload a pair of camping clothesline reels with. You just unspool enough wire to work on your desired frequency and have at it. I got sidetracked into making frequency specific pre-cut antenna sections instead. I hope I get back to my original plan before I use up the entire spool!
