Pictured: Model 604 Master Bow Compass

ALVIN drawing compasses span a massive range of sizes, applications, and uses. Our traditional beginner and intermediate level compasses are sure to find themselves right at home in any geometry or art class. Our professional-level compasses are the perfect precision tool that any engineer, draftsman, or professor needs to add to their collection of drawing instruments. These metal drafting compasses can make precision circles from 1/8" up to 22" in diameter with added beam bar.

ALVIN compasses are made with German precision engineering that allows for the precise and consistent drawing of radii. Made from quality materials such as zinc alloy, ALVIN drafting compasses are sure to last the test of time. The more advanced models, such as the 205V and the 975K, have adjustable knee joints for rapid adjustment and even greater ability to draft with accuracy. Kits with pencil adaptors allow for the attachment of a drafting pencil, pen, or marker. Add one of ALVIN's model 958 spring blade pencils to your kit with a pencil adaptor, or buy the model 505V kit to take your drafting abilities to another level. This pen is finely honed to create precise lines with India Ink.

Good bar compass but as with everything German, the love of plastic is the issue, sooner or later.Cons:Graduations are nothing but a sticker and all the black parts are plastic. Anyway, good engineering can still prevail (even with plastic). Well, it didn’t. The connection point between the two bars is plastic with plastic screws. The molding process has left a slope inside the block so it has a 2 degree tilt. This produces an error in that, it’s pointless to use the ruler on the extension bar. In contrast, a $12 metal ruler is graduated by laser, so why is this $30? There is more… Plastic travel blocks accessories don’t fit well because the plastic is too closed (I just use a thumb nail to spread the plastic a bit as I push the point in.) …Sigh.Pros:Graduation sticker is accurate (LOL).Aluminum bars are light and firm.Accuracy is sufficient for most drafting needs.Comment: Good product if not needing anything past 12 inches on the main bar.

This is a well-made drafting instrument, what I missed in the description was that there's thumbwheels at the top of the trammels allowing for easy submillimeter-precision positioning. I'm using it for woodworking where you don't actually need that level of precision but it's nice to know it's there, and it's way better than the usual pencil-on-a-string setup.

My husband designs, and he says it works just fine. Just what he needed. Thanks.

Need to cut a large circle for a wood working project. Did the job very nice. Think the price could of been a little lower but overall very pleased with the product.

Wanted to add this review, and the attached photos, since I saw so many other reviews of this product saying that it arrived badly packaged and missing pieces. My product arrived quickly and in good condition with all of the pieces shown in the photo. I would say that the quality is good for the price and I was able to draw accurate circles with no problem. A feature that I especially like is that you can lock the pointer and the pencil in position on the rod so that they don't move while you are drawing.

Perfect for my needs. I have a Staedtler rotary sharpener designed for these drafting leads so I did not have any problems with the beam scale calibration. I think someone reported a problem, but the only thing I can think of is that he used a sanding board to sharpen the leads, which would leave the point off-center, and will screw-up the calibration.

Pros:1. Construction quality is good (I disagree with previous reviewer who implied it was cheaply made); the compass is made in Germany and the quality is fine2. The ruler is clearly labeled3. The pivot points/drawing head move back and forth smoothly; easy to fixCons:1. As noted (correctly) by another reviewer, the alignment of the points with the indicator on the ruler is off by about 1/5 inch. This is an annoying design flaw.2. The compass comes with components (2nd beam, extra points, sharpener etc.) in a plastic compartmentalized container, but the whole thing is very flimsy and cheap; there should be a solid plastic case for storing this thing and/or keeping the accessories organized.3. The brand advertised is "Alvin," but the actual product is labeled "Quint Graphics." Presumably the 2 companies are related.Overall, it is good value but the designers should address Cons #1 and #2.

I have already used this beam compass to mark circles for a cupcake tree requested by my son for his wedding. Works very well. Easy to set up accurately against a ruler, and easy to use. I chose it over one with a built-in ruler because I would probably check the measurement against my own ruler anyway. Comes in its own case which hangs on the wall along with my other tools.
