Takes 9V battery and does not ship with one, so you have to order one separately, and 9V are more expensive these days than AA or AAA. Other brands / models use those. However, I bought another unit that runs on AA batteries and it was not nearly as accurate or repeatable as this one.

Check the calibration by strobing an LED light or a fluorescent tube; mine was spot on and held steady at either 3600 or 7200 which is a multiple of 60 cycle incoming. When you use the tape take a black magic marker and blacken an area around the tape and the tach will lock right in.Good value for money IMHO.

After using this for probably 6 or 7 times, it apparently burnt up inside. I only used it once every couple of weeks, and then only for probably 2 to 3 minutes to check the rpm on small electric motors. I had it out and it was working fine, laid it down and then smelled an burning. Picked it up and it wouldn't work. I took the battery out and it was very hot. Apparently a dead short inside. So yes, it did work well for approximately a grand total of probably 10 minutes. I waited to late to be able to return it. So my money was wasted. Probably poor quality control. I would not recommend this tachometer at all.

Worked well and my equipment was dead on after the overhaul. I haven't attempted to calibrate with a known frequency generator.

Works well and compares equivalent RPM on my milling machine.

To be honest, I had few expectations of this unit. I needed to get some idea of the actual spindle speed range of a couple of routers. One had the supposed range printed on the label and the other was a mystery. Often, I'll go to "hazard fright" for this type of device, but in this case, their unit was twice as much money and the reviews were poor. So, I took a shot with this unit.Obviously, I don't have a perfect calibration, on the known unit, the range was supposedly 16,000 rpm to 26,000 rpm. At the minimum speed, this tach measured 16,245 and it was rock steady. At the maximum, it measured 25,800, and it was again rock steady. Since I only need to know within +/- 500 rpm or so, this was plenty good, and I consider the unit be sufficiently accurate for my purposes. Obviously, a true calibration would enable a better answer.

Perfect for measuring motor RPMs. One of the kids must have gotten ahold of it, because we found reflective stickers on the ceiling fan! I use it to measure hoverboard motor's RPMs to get theoretical maximum speed readings.
