The hammer works great for underlayment. Which is why I wanted it. I did hit my finger the day before it arrived. For me it was worth purchasing.

This hammer is very handy when laying underlayment on a roof. The magnet holds the capping nail in place while swinging it down. The back holds a razor for cutting the felt and there is a claw under the head for removing nails. The handle is at a slight angle off perpendicular to reduce scraped knuckles. It takes a little practice to get the swing right to drive the capping nail straight, but once you get the hang of it you can't go back.This is a Made in USA, quality tool. Definitely worth the investment, even for the occasional patch job.

I give it 4 stars because of the price not the product they are fairly proud of this thing. The hatchet is great for hand caps. You can go almost as fast as a cap gun once you get used to it. Took me about 10 Sq of paper before I really started getting the hang of it. It takes a weird feeling pushing swing with your hand very close to the roof deck as the head hits the deck to keep from bending up the nails. I took the Gage off, I rarely lay 3 tab nowadays and I'm not a hand nailer anyway. I have done a couple shingle repair jobs with some hand bangers and really don't care for it , like I said the weird swing it takes to drive a nail straight can be hard on the knuckles if you graz a shingle during your swing. The nail puller on mine is only good if the nail is sticking up more than a little otherwise you can't get under it. I like the fact it takes regular hook and straight blades, it will cut shingles well with either blade in but I only really use it to dry in so I use a straight blade. It's of good quality,it should last a while and overall I'm happy I got it and will continue to use it.
