Note

Please note that you need to confirm the taper of your lathe using this 5C collet chuck is 14°15' before you place an order. Otherwise, the run-out will not be accurate at all. Please don't buy the chuck unless the taper of your lathe is exactly 14°15'. Usually, when a lathe has been running for a few years, its taper becomes not as accurate as a new lathe, which causes inaccurate run-out when operating the 5C collet chuck.

The method of measuring the 0269-5C Collet Chucks: Step 1

1

  • Check the runout of lathe spindle first. Adjust the runout value of nose within 0.004mm; of cylinder or taper within 0.004mm shown as left.

The method of measuring the 0269-5C Collet Chucks: Step 2

2

  • Then put the 5C chuck onto the lathe spindle nose, with the setting hole at the right position to fix each other (While measuring, we used the screw lock device shown in picture-1. We did not have cam lock device shown in picture-2. They work theoretically the same, by different methods.)

The method of measuring the 0269-5C Collet Chucks: Step 3 and Step 4

34

  • After putting the 5C fixture into the measuring equipment, enable the screw lock or the cam lock to work with the chuck on the measuring equipment. Please be noticed to tighten the cam screws in multiple strokes crossly.
  • Approach the surface of the taper hole with a micron indicator; then rotate the measuring equipment slightly. Reading and noting the micrometer’s value. Tighten the one or two cam screws to correct the 5C fixture, until the runout value within 0.006mm.

The method of measuring the 0269-5C Collet Chucks: Step 5

4

  • Applying the standard 5C measuring bar, use two lock gears to tighten it slightly. And assure the run-out of the 5C fixture orifice, 0.015mm.

I wish it was possible to give a negative star review. All of the attachment bolts were included, but none of the attachment points had been fully tapped. In some instances, the bolt would not clear by more than .25". Terrible! I would not even run my lathe after the chuck was installed, in fear that it would fly apart. The main attachment bolts required a M14x1 tap, which is not a common tap. Terrible QA control. Do not buy this product.

This product is a great example of today's buying philosophy. It looks great, it has a technical data sheet that makes it sound great, it has a price tag 5 times lower than American made product. The only problem is it is all lies. The product is a piece of junk.

I ordered this product in a D1-5 camlock configuration the first unit came in with .00075 runnout, not awful but not what i was looking for, on closer inspection the unit was not seating on the D1 taper at all so on reinstall it moved all over the place. They kindly replaced the unit and the second unit seated on the taper but had .006 runnout ?? it is a well bade unit but i suggest that if you have a D1 spindle order the plain back and a mounting plate so you can set it up as a true set as the above units have no ability to adjust.

Received with .003" runout at the chuck, and almost .010" a couple of inches out. The chuck feels like a high quality tool, but the runout will cost you more money than you could possibly save buying this. Even a basic machining task could be butchered by this chuck. I'd love to get one of these that is actually within tolerance like some of the other reviewers. I'd be more than happy to remove this review if you can send me a chuck that is within spec. I have several other tools from Accusize that are perfectly fine so this is pretty disappointing.

If time is money to you I'd recommend a pass on this one.Not ready for prime time out of the box. Run out was close to .0045" as received. I was committed to a job so I put some work into it and it's functional now.I put the three jaw back on and turned a taper on a piece of stock to D1 specs. Setup the collet chuck between centers and indicated the back of the chuck. Back was not flat with considerable distortion about each of the cam lock features. High spot of about .0018". Blued it up and took light facing cuts until blue cleaned up about 95%. Remounted the collet chuck and run out was under .0001" on the ground 5C taper surface. Getting a slight amount of blue transfer on the D1 spindle taper now. Repeatability with collets has been under .0003" with several chuck changes. Chuck is functional at this point.

Before mounting the chuck to my gunsmith lathe I checked the spindle run-out which was almost zero. I mounted the D1-5 collet chuck and checked the run-out with two indicators. Both indicators showed the total run-out to be lest that 1/1,000 inch. I demounted the chuck. Cleaned it up and remounted it. I checked the run-out with third test indicator. The run-out was still less than 1/1,000 inch. Really impressive for an inexpensive chuck. Because this chuck has had very mixed reviews on Amazon I contacted Accusize prior to purchasing to ask some questions. They were very responsive, very nice and indicated that they would stand behind their product. Now...Is this chuck the same quality as a $615 Bison? Probably not. However for a home machinist such as myself it is plenty good enough at 1/2 the price of a Bison.

I am a Tooling Engineer/Tool Maker by trade and have used lots of precision tooling. Have to say that this collet chuck is a beautifully made piece of craftsmanship that you can be proud of. Nicely ground surfaces and radii where needed. It came in a very nice wooden box, but unfortunately the box was virtually destroyed during shipping. The box did protect the collet chuck from any damage, and I used lots of glue and epoxy to fix it. I have seen this almost identical product sold by others for almost $1000, and those don't have the more sophisticated spring loaded chuck wrench that this one has. If you need a collet chuck, do yourself a favor and get this one.
