I got this kit to test the pH and nitrogen level of the soil around my azaleas and gardenia in my flower bed. Both are acid loving plants but showing signs of nitrogen deficiency. While the kit came with all the necessary tools to collect, mix and test my soil sample (testing strip, tube and spoon), the instruction was not very clear to me. I was not sure how deeply to collect my soil sample and if the 2-spoonful should be packed tightly or loosely. Also, the provided pH level chart should indicate acidic vs alkaline levels. I suspected my soil is too alkaline (>7) due to the tiny, sparse leaves on my plants, but my color match of the result test strip actually showed a proper acidic level of pH 5 for my plant. Using my old pH meter and my neighbor’s, both showed a pH of 7. To possibly ascertain the accuracy of these strips, I performed a couple of other tests. One with just distilled water which should be pH of 7, but test strip showed a pH 4. However, this variance may be due to CO2 in the air. My second test was with distilled water and baking soda which should be pH of 9 and I am happy to say that the test strip showed exactly the same pH value. So, I may conclude that the difference in the pH of my soil test could be due to amount/quality of my soil sample. The nitrogen level for my soil test showed a level of L which gives me important insight into my plant health.

Don’t buy this. Followed instructions exactly and the strips did not even change colors. Even used alkaline water to test and would not change from original color. Waste of money

When planting sod, it's important to get things started off on the right foot. It was great to be able to confirm that my soil levels were in the right range. I'm hopefully that this spring I will have beautiful, thriving grass! This product is simple to use and a great investment into a green yard.

I have a few garden beds that I know are very low in nitrogen, so I have to supplement them accordingly. It's nice this kit comes with 100 test strips so they will last me a while. It's also great that it does the pH at the same time since pH is really important for plants as well.

As a science major I really love this. I was confused at first because no paper directions were in the box but they are on the strip tube and the back of box. Literally 4 easy peasy steps. Very accurate I feel. I’m having trouble with a couple of my house plants and testing the soil to see if that’s a factor. I’m finding this test I did for my dracaena is showing mid level or slightly elevated nitrogen and slightly too acidic soil levels. Dracaena this variety I’m speaking of likes ph of 6 or 6.5 only slightly acidic test is showing it at 5. I will take all this info into account. Neat little test to keep in your plant kit doesn’t take up any room and will last a while with 100 strips. Best part is when done you can just buy more strips and keep the tube to use again and again!

I will update my review once I've tested more soil with these strips with distilled water. I used reverse osmosis filtered water and got the same test result each time which was the same as the strip before testing. So, either the readings are correct or possibly using RO water isn't possible with these strips. I don't know.The container the strips are stored in is sturdy. The little spoon shovel and testing container fit together nicely. Seems like a good product, but I believe user error on my end has resulted in faulty results.
