These things are really durable and when they do come apart it's only three pieces, so they're really easy to reassemble. I'd liken the sound they make to something much closer to a rhythm egg than a wire brush. Plastic, but not unpleasant. When fully extended the center of mass moves forward and the tapered shape suddenly lends itself very well to a traditional grip. The other side has a rubber cap that has some percussive value.They are functional, if gentle, on a set of timbales, but for me the real value of them is beating the snot out of everything else with them--everything in the kitchen, the deck chairs I read in, the steering wheel of the car while I wait for someone in a parking lot, anyplace I can be alone and making racket. They really don't do a lot of denting and scratching--but the flip side of that is they aren't very loud, either. Retracted, they're only nine inches long and fit in my lunch-bag. They may sound their very best on rocks and concrete, so they may be the best camping percussion device I've ever seen.
