This was my first time using a compression tester. I wanted to check on my old wagoneers compression. I wanted to verify some claims that an engine flush can raise engine compression. So I checked the 4 easiest cylinders. Super easy to find the right size adaptor to fit into the spark plug hole. I was a little worried the hose would unscrew from the adaptor but that didnt happen. It worked perfectly, no leaks. The kit comes in a nice and sturdy hard case. Keeps everything organized and safe. I wont be using a compression tester often but im glad I have it to spot check the bad cylinder that I found. The engine flush did not raise the compression but im seeing if some other chemicals to clean the valves may help.

You might make some expensive decisions about your engine condition based on the results of a compression test so you want to make certain the results are accurate. How can such an inexpensive / cheap tester produce accurate results ? This parts in this kit in general are all pretty fragile. Particularly the hose that you screw into the spark plug hole. You would prefer a stiffer hose when you try to tighten it against the rubber O Ring. If it is not seated firmly it could leak and you would not hear it buried in the spark plug hole. You do not want leaks at any of the connections. Is the gage accurate. When I tried to compare this gage against a known accurate one I struggled to find a way due to the weird / propriety disconnect connectors in this kit. Nothing in the shop would connect to the shape of these unknown connectors. I managed to test the gage accuracy by removing it and installing it as 1 of a 2 gage leak down tester which we knew was dead accurate. Somewhat to our surprise, the gage was dead accurate when compared to the known good one. The pressure release also worked as it should. The adapters included were clean of any machining chips and screwed on nicely. You want to screw them on the hose pretty tight, maybe put a little oil on the threads entering the spark plug hole so when you unscrew the hose you do not leave the adapter in the hole, a common problem. Conclusion : The kit I received is capable of performing an accurate compression test if you are careful of assembling and checking the connections for leaks and can importantly, verify the accuracy of the gage. At this price and the fragility of the components I would not trust it without verifying the gage accuracy. We cannot verify durability but it is initially somewhat suspect. If this is your budget it is certainly worth a try but there are better kits out there. If your compression tests low you probably want to confirm by retesting with another known kit. No need to pull an engine on bad test results.

I would like to start this review making it clear that I'm not a professional mechanic and only work on engines as a hobby, or as a necessity when needed. The extent of compression testers is limited to the ones I've rented at the auto parts store. That being said- this one works just fine. It is clear when you inspect the various parts of this kit that it's not a high end product, but it didn't look terrible. The real test was the test itself. I had recently bought and older car to restore and on my list of things to do was a compression test on the cylinders. I figured in order to give this a fair shot, I'd rent a professional one from the parts store (it's considered a free rental) and put this head to head with it (pun intended). The fittings on this were a bit more finicky to attach and detach then the rental, but they did go together. The test itself registered very similar results to the rental unit so the accuracy was plenty close enough for my purposes. It has several various attachments that I'll probably never use, but overall I'm pleased with it and for the price? Absolutely. For the non pro, this will work just fine for what you need it to do.
