What is Turbocharger?

  • A turbocharger is one of the most important accessories for your vehicle. It is a compressor that is installed on the exhaust side of the vehicle. Its purpose is to enhance the engine horsepower. As the engine’s rpm increases, the turbocharger drives air into the engine, thereby increasing the power.

Below are some common symptoms of a failing turbocharger.

  • Too Much Exhaust Smoke

If the casing of your turbocharger cracks or if some internal seals are worn out, it could cause the oil to leak into your exhaust. When this leaked oil burns, it will result in a characteristic blue or grey smoke. This smoke is more visible when the turbo is running. Hence, if you notice excessive smoke when revving the engine, chances are your turbo is faulty.

  • Loss of Power

Lack of overall power is another common symptom of a bad turbocharger. Your vehicle may not accelerate as quickly as expected or generate the expected amount of power while running. So, if you notice that your vehicle is sluggish and doesn’t reach its maximum speeds as quickly, it could be a sign of a failing turbocharger.

  • Increased Oil Consumption

If you notice that your car is using more oil than usual, it could be an indication that your turbocharger is leaking oil into the manifold. It can eventually lead to the turbo failing.

  • Loud Siren Noise

Turbocharged vehicles are known to make pleasant noises, such as a blow off valve noise. However, some noises can be irritating. If your car is producing a sound like that of a police siren, and the noise keeps getting louder, it could be a sign of a faulty turbo. It usually is the result of a loose pipe or malfunctioning blades in the turbo.

  • Check Engine Warning Lights

Most of today’s cars have computer systems that are capable of detecting turbo faults and triggering the check engine light. However, check engine lights cover various other issues. So, it’s advisable to do some further diagnostic tests to find out what exactly is ailing your engine.

  • The Boost Gauge

If your car comes with a boost gauge or you have installed an aftermarket one, then you have an excellent way of finding out how well your turbocharger is functioning. If you notice a drop in the boost level, it is a sign that the performance of your turbocharger is compromised.

Worked great for 3 weeks, then failed. I had to buy a replacement and pay to have it replaced at a shop. That unit is also experiencing problems and is still being worked on. The housing cracked by the wastegate valve and the seller tried to ship me a new impeller as a fix. That's like replacing your water pump to fix a cracked engine block. Horrendous communication with the seller. STAY AWAY!Update... still no communication from the seller. Bought a second unit from them that failed in 7 miles. They will not respond to messages and I had to go through Amazon for credit. STAY AWAY FROM THIS GARBAGE! I would give negative stats if I could. Such a headache!

Replaced cracked TC in 2011 Chev Cruze 1.6L, 185K miles. Do far, 2 months into repair and part is functioning. OEM was well over $750+ and we simply needed an alternative to keep repair manageable.

Recently purchased it, took me a couple days to install it myself. I’m no stranger to car work, but as this was an aftermarket turbo everything seemed a little off. After getting it installed, I bled the oil and coolant lines and changed the oil. It ran seemingly okay for a day. The next day, it became completely defective. After losing my patience tinkering with it myself, I decided to take it into a mechanic shop. They informed the turbo was bad, and that this is often the case with these cheaper aftermarket turbos. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. BUY A REFURBISHED GM TURBO. Now I’m down 2 grand with the bad turbo I bought included. Absolute nightmare.

I would give 0 stars if possible. Maybe I had a defective turbo but its $500 I won't see and the car still doesn't work. Underboost code that makes the cruze drive like a dump truck. Garbage!

I installed the turbo. Make sure you by all new lines for the oil in and return as a minimum, these are usually what has caused the failure, blocked oil lines. What I learned:1 - I have big hands and this is hard to work on.2 - Attached the oil return line to the turbo first and then feed it into the block3 - With the coils disconnected and attach the Banjo Oil input line ALL BY ITS SELF to the oil filter/feed unit. Put a cup under the line and see that you get about 8oz of oil every 15 seconds. Clean out the filter area, flush clean oil through and try again. This is where my system clogged. See youtube videos if you want a better explanation. So far it works, I have 200 miles on it. A little surging issues but I think it is getting better. I have 88K miles on the car and I will keep you informed if it fails. I would buy it based on my initial results.
