I ordered this specifically for testing Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). I’m very careful with the DEF I used in my truck as I don’t want to introduce any contaminants. I always buy it in sealed containers and wanted to take the next step of testing the fluid before putting it into my truck. This tester by NEEBETEK fits the bill. It’s a 5-in-1 so I can use if for other purposes too, such as checking antifreeze.One feature that I really appreciate is the adjustable reticle. I wear glasses so I was a little concerned about being able to see the fine print through the reticle. I was happy to see I could adjust it for my eyes (a pretty strong far sighted prescription) and could clearly see through it. I was even able to get a picture through it from my iPhone.I’d definitely order this again. It is a bit fiddly to do the test, but I know of no other way to reliably test DEF…and the impact of bad DEF in your newer diesel is just too much to not be testing what you put in your truck.

Just don't expect it to make fluid checks fun – there's only so much magic a refractometer can work!

I’ve seen refractometers used with alcohol and sugars before but didn’t fully appreciate their value until using this one. Specifically designed for automotive work, this refractometer offers a surprising range of measurements with just a simple setup. You place a drop of coolant on the glass, cover it, and the line between the blue and white areas shows the fluid's concentration. Each meter is calibrated for a particular fluid—battery fluid index is towards the upper right, while glycol starts at the bottom center. This allows you to accurately assess how each fluid measures up against where it should be. Every garage and shop involved in automotive work should have one of these to provide a quantitative scale for assessing vehicle fluid quality. Highly recommended.

Super easy to use and will last a lifetime with proper care. Much better than the old style, squeeze bulb testers that need replacing every few years because the rubber bulbs deteriorate and fail. Also, refractometers are much more accurate. Well worth the couple extra dollars you will invest up front over the bulb style testers. And in the long run, I'll bet the refractometer will end up being cheaper.
