I don't know that I would even call myself a hobbyist machinist, but I did run these in my 7x12 mini lathe and they seem to work well. They definitely beat the old cutoff tool that I was using and provide for a cleaner cut. They even come with extra cutting inserts in case I get heavy handed and break one, or just wear one out over time. Overall, I am happy with the setup and would recommend it.

I am just a hobbyist, I can make chips, but I am not about to sell my parts, so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt? I was using these on aluminum (what I had chucked up at the moment) and it did ok. Surface finish wasn't amazing, but that could very well be my skill and not the tool. The inserts seem to be pretty sensitive to tool height. My first attempt at setting it up, I had the tool too high and it didn't want to cut at all. How they would do in a production environment, I don't know, but for a guy to make a couple threaded bungs every once in a while, they did pretty good.

My lathe skills would probably earn me a grade of around 25% F if in a class, but I've learned what I need to do on an old South Bend machine as I go. I needed to turn some tiny aluminum piston heads with grooves for rubber O-rings. This was a perfect purchase for this job. I actually turned the outer diameter with this tool first, and it gave a smooooth, bright surface finish. I then went in for the little O-ring grooves, and of course this tool was perfect for that. Pleasantly surprised given the low price!
