Scratchboard is a great activity for teaching art and for relaxing. What is important to know is that these don't reveal a multicolored background as most do, which is fine as long as you are aware of that. If you want to work with designs focussing on line, pattern and contrast, they are good for that, and they do come with a set of tools. You can color them afterwards if you have the right supplies for that as well. If you haven't tried scratchboard, it's fun and a different way to sketch, so I would recommend this set. The size of the pages is a nice compromise between the 4 x 4 sheets that are often sold and full pages that are more daunting to start in on.

This is my first ever attempt at scratch art, I thought it could be a fun way to do some monochrome sketches but with a lot more tactile feedback. I just used the tools provided and it was fine, I couldn't get as much detail as I wanted and that seemed less from the point on the scratching tool and more from the thickness of the paint, it tends to want to come up in flakes rather than super smooth lines. I also found that the paper tended to curl, even more some once I did my sketch on it.I think this set is more fun than art, since it didn't give me the control I wanted, but it was fun, messy! But fun!
