These zero insertion force (ZIF) sockets defy their purpose. They are so poorly made that they will not survive repeated service. As delivered, the plastic handle falls off since the hole in the plastic is undersized and the manufacturer simply shoved until the scraped plastic prevented adequate capture. The solution will be to hand-drill the hole to clear out the debris and to then use a dab of Gorilla glue. The plated metal contact pins are so poorly made that they disort under use and can not be fixed.Ask yourself, should I solder this into a PCB, realizing that, if used as intended, desoldering will follow after a handful of cycles? It needs to be acknowledged that the real-deal from companies like Aries is about 10 times the cost of these sockets. Avoid Textool ZIF sockets, and knock-offs of the Textool knock-offs, to avoid disappointment.

When the brand name 3M ZIF sockets were approaching forty dollars delivered from digikey EACH, I really needed to investigate a cheaper alternative. These were literally 20x cheaper. Well worth the flyer to try them out. These are designed for 300mil wide chips, and also have a 300mil wide base. The solder tails are 3.5mm long, however, due to the design of bottom standoffs, only about 3mm is usable. This makes it precariously too short to make great contact with solderless breadboards. In a pinch they might work, but the tolerances are too close for my comfort. The build quality on them is acceptable, with solid grabbing closing force on the legs of the attached IC. The center bar is a bit too high, and while there's positive contact on the pins, the 3M sockets are just simply better. The pins on my batch of sockets are angled slightly which made them a bit fiddly to fit into the board I was using. Not as perfect as I normally expect with these types of things. For a one-off hobbyist project, I think they are more than suitable. One or two day availability of these also makes them attractive so as not to stall my projects out too long. There's good value here, and for my application, they will work fine.

Just needed to file a corner off to fit on the uno. Breadboard works well without any mod. You will need a c-clamp or vise (with thin wood on each side in both cases) to press it into the arduino socket. I tried it by hand a few times and had to straighten the pins. C-clamp worked first time.

These fit fine into a UNO's board socket but you'll need to create a notch for one of the boards capacitors. I've attached a photo of my hack job.

Works great. All of the ZIP pins closed as expected. Unlike those cheap ones I bought from E-Bay.
